I'd say cocktail dresses if it's evening and non-religious or at least not being held in an actual place of worship. If it's evening and a religious service (though honestly I can't think of many religious weddings held late in the day) then cocktail only if it's long-sleeved and not low-necked and not TOO short, or if you have something appropriate you can put over it for the service that stays on without holding it, matches the outfit and isn't sheer.

Day dresses in appropriate color, formality depending on the type of service, if it's before 5pm. For the highest end, see Prince William's wedding. For lower end, a nice dress in light fabric or skirt/top would be appropriate. Cocktail wear is not appropriate in the daytime. (Also at least where I went to college, where one follows these sorts of rules, you'd die of heatstroke in most evening wear in the daytime.)

And I wish more American weddings would adopt the English style of hats for weddings. Hats are fun. There are not enough excuses for them.

And I was told when taking a trip to San Fransisco in early summer it would be "warm."

They lied like dogs.

I have never been to a day wedding or day service so nothing other than a cocktail dress ever came up. But you are absolutely right on all accounts, San Francisco being "warm" in particular. Lies, damned lies.

I was at a wedding at an Orthodox synagogue in London (the real one ;)) once. I wore a long black sleeveless gown with a rather plunging neckline but had a wrap with me to cover up the skin for the temple part.

I have an August wedding to go to, wearing this: http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306 418059&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446469043&R=886115237841&P_name=Diane+von+Furstenberg&N=4294912394+306418059+4294929614&bmUID=jrRX2rv

That's very pretty, cruisin! Love the color.

I am still undecided what to wear to this beach wedding I am going to. I am thinking I want a silk dress, a short one but you guys didn't like my first choice when I posted it somewhere in the snark thread.

Have been looking and haven't found anything yet.

I'm on the east bay of San Francisco and while it's normally pretty balmy, nights can get rather cold because of the fog.

I do have a lightweight silk/cashmere sweater that's dressy enough to wear so I can throw that on while inside the church.

I think the short dress will be fine. - I would go with purple. You said the invitation had a teal border. It's possible that teal is one of the wedding colours and the blue might be too close to that.

I'm going to a wedding next weekend. The catholic ceremony is at 1pm and the reception is at 5:30pm.

I have a simple, navy, 3/4 sleeve dress from H&M for the ceremony and then a black cocktail dress for the reception.

Thanks, the color is even prettier in person. And, it turns my eyes that color! Just have to decide if I am going to wear a nude patent leather, open toe pump, or a black lace open toe pump with a bow. Probably need to figure out what jewelry I'm going to wear first.

I don't know what your budget is, but DVF has some gorgeous, silky, flowy dresses. They would be perfect for a beach wedding. Posting Saks site, because they have a 20% off Friends & Family sale going on - Don't know if you have to use a Saks card or not. Another brand to check out - David Meister.

I love the Xandria embellished dress, but it's a bit too $$$!

I vote for nude patent. Thanks, will check out DVF.

I kind of like this one: http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306 418059&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446486137&R=886115236202&P_name=Diane+von+Furstenberg&N=4294912394+306418059&bmUID=jrSn0jr

Oh my gosh, I love this dress (http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306 422146&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446445855&R=459148682942&P_name=Roberto+Cavalli&N=306422146&bmUID=jrSlEXa), why oh why is it just in yellow?!

This dress (http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306 422146&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446451505&R=713642988154&P_name=Phoebe+Couture+by+Kay+Unger&N=306422146&bmUID=jrSnRlp) looks fun to wear and this dress (http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306 422146&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446485004&R=744330947597&P_name=Carmen+Marc+Valvo&N=306422146&bmUID=jrSobQp) is just stunning.

As for hair, I'm thinking old fashioned bouffant with some glitzy headband. BTW, since Ice Alisa asked about my coloring, c'est moi (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mariemay/6973879424/) taken this morning. I just dyed my hair black. If I decide to dye it back to brown before I go to this wedding, this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mariemay/6973879500/) is how I look.

East and South Bay and Marin are a whole different world. They actually have summers.

You're right about that, it'll be in the 90's in Pleasanton/Livermore while just in the high 60's in Pacifica/S.F. on the same day! Micro-climates....

Which is why I always check SF weather by neighborhood. It could be 58F and foggy near the ocean and 71F sunny downtown. You never know.

Good grief -- the disclosure: Model shown is 5'11" wearing a size 4.

(but pretty dress as long as the slit behaves when you're sitting.)

 that it says that, I've never seen that kind of disclosure before! As if you can't tell the model is stick-skinny. :P Length is always an issue with dresses though...

Length has always been a problem for me since I'm short, exactly 5 feet. I have to alter almost all of my dresses.

I am not that much taller than you but I hear you. I have to alter pretty much everything. I've only bought a dress once last year that I could wear off the rack. That was a first in many years.
