The polka is big at summer festivals with beer drinking in many areas of the US, particularly at Polish & German festivals.

A cousin of my husband's used to play with Dick Pillar's Polka Band.
And Ski used to play Tuba, so in his honor, here's the a Tuba Polka Medley played at a Dick Pillar Polkabration.

Wikipedia on the subject of the polka
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polka

Polka is danced all over the world, in many versions. I posted a Finnish polka & a Mexican polka, but there are polkas all over, including Peruvian polkas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pehFuJBeoMo)and Curacaon polka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGQ0JzQofEs) and the Graskop Polka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_vQv0UO8ps) is African.

It is also performed in Australia-here's The Black Cat Piddled in the White Cat's Eye (Jenny Lind Polka)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZl9_w8mZ_w

performed by Warren Fahey's Australian Bush Orchestra

It's worth noting that the last part of Die Fledermaus used by Charlie & Meryl is a ballroom version of the polka.

So if you put the name of a country and polka in youtube, pretty much you will get plenty of hits. Even Looney Tunes polka yielded the following:

Hahaha- I love the "Pigs in Polka"!

I did love their Die Fledermaus polka bit this past season. It fit them so perfectly.

Here's another polka in the ballroom vein by Strauss- the Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka.

A nice playful ballroom polka is Unter Donner Und Blitz by Johann Straus, Op. 324

Winkler & Lohse used it for their Grand Ballroom OD

The Pizzicato Polka (also Strauss) was used by Klimova & Ponomarenko for their Polka OSP & these baby ballerinas:

and another Strauss polka is Im Krapfenwald'l, Polka Francaise, which has bird song imitations worked in.

and Annen Polka (also by Strauss)

and of course, from a completely 'nother planet, Weird Al Yankovic :)

"Polka Face"

"Angry White Boy Polka"

"Polka Power" (an anime version by Weird Al)

I'd love to see someone use Weird Al

Literally anything can be done as a polka if you put it into 2/4 time and add either a tuba or an accordion or both, including Here's Du Hast by Rammstein

Rammstein also did the xrated Pussy Polka, for that matter.

Too cooool!

But they should have used Meryl & Charlie's YP instead of DelSchoes--Charlie would get to be his very own unicorn.

D/W should seriously do this. Talk about awesome! Especially if Charlie dresses as a unicorn.

I'd prefer if someone dresses as a liopleurodon. ;)

D/W have actually already done the Yankee Polka to the Charlie the Unicorn song, minus the lyrics, at Nationals that year. Its real name is the Clarinet Polka. I found a catchy Big Band version of it on youtube.

Doris, is this music a polka? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Zcl0dQJLHKU#t=20s It's Domnina/Shabalin from Ice Age, the Russian pro-skating show by Ilia Averbukh. I'm not necessarily recommending the music, but I do heartily recommend the show (lots on youtube), especially for those who like the more theatre aspect of ice dance and miss some of the older ice dancers. There has been some beautiful show choreography done here.

And I think that Charlie would rather be a unicorn than a golden retriever

Thanks for all the polka links, Doris! That's so cool that you are so knowledgeable about polka!

That joyous polka section was my favourite part of DF. I love how they work their way into it, those moments when they are almost touching cheeks. And their feet were so light and quick in that section, and they looked like they were having a ball! When I saw it live, their diagonal was coming towards me and it was such a rush! And the audience was clapping along. They just got you right into the program and carried the energy all the way through. They were just awesome!

They worked beautifully with Strauss's music, and I wonder if they will go with something else from his body of work. And I also wonder if they will do a waltz/polka, as they have really improved their lines and their ability to vary their speed. I am so anxious to learn of their music selections and program ideas.

The perk is blinding!! :)

I love polka music. I even love all the YP CD tracks! Unfortunately, I'm not a polka expert (but I suspect Doris Pulaski is!!! ;))

I'm definitely looking forward to this year's SD.

They are so adorable, I can't stand it! :)

That's so nice for you! It is always nice when you enjoy the style of music and dance (I loved Latin music&dance, so I really enjoyed this year's SDs). Do you have a favourite piece and/or was there a particular piece you had in mind for them? Did you like their 4CC polka music? I really loved their version.

Thanks Doris for all the polka variety :)
