Does this mean Meryl will win again next year for August: Osage County? Will it be out in time? 2 in a row would more than make up for the 30 years in between and probably be the only time in history? Getting ahead of myself? lol

The movie isn't even scheduled to start filming until September, so it would not be released until 2014.

Davis had a weak performance and did not deserve the oscar.

  Viola Davis had a weak performance?

Davis and Streep were equally deserving of the Oscar, IMO. I'd have been happy/sad no matter which way it came out.

Congrats to The Artist! Looking forward to it on Netflix (I read they got rights).

I wonder why they bother with nine nominations honestly. The two movies I knew least about were Tree of Life and Extremely Loud and it hardly mattered as they were barely featured.

To answer my own question:

Four actors have won three or more Academy Awards. Katharine Hepburn won four for Best Actress. Jack Nicholson won two Best Actor Oscars and a Best Supporting Actor award. Ingrid Bergman won two Best Actress awards and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Walter Brennan won three Best Supporting Actor awards.

Meryl joins an elite group. :encore:

MERYL

Hubby and I were  when she said that. I am sure most people are thrilled for her.

Michelle Williams?? She captured the spirit of Marilyn Monroe? I could tell by that small clip that she didn't! UGH!!

Did you actually see the movie? I did, today. She was amazing as Marilyn. Both she and Branagh captured their characters without veering off into parody. Wonderful film.

Viola Davis was widely expected to win, so I wouldn't say that. Streep and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" winning editing were the two biggest surprises (for me) tonight.

My sentiments exactly. They were both superb.

Loved Jean's "Formidable!!!" :cheer2:

I hope Meryl gets even more, she has lost some years when she should have won.

Yeah, I was also , I mean, she hasn't actually won an Oscar in decades.

Wow. I didn't expect that. Her third Oscar. How many others have three Oscars? From awhile ago, but in terms of actors the only one I can think of are her, Jack Nicholson, and Katherine Hepburn (who won four in total)?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see you got there first. I forgot about Bergman anyway.

I have to say Tom Cruise looked very good. Whoever takes care of him has mad skills.

Tom cruise announcing best picture? But isn't he irrelevant these days?

He's in Hollywood rehab: First step--after apologizing for offenses (Brooke, others) take a supporting role (Tropic Thunder.)

Second step---pray for a movie with good/great box office that the critcs like more than hate. Misson Impossible whatever number did quite well.

Third step---Be picked to hand out one of the "important" Oscars.

Fourth step---Make a movie that merits critical raves (your move Tom.)

Hubby and I were  when she said that. I am sure most people are thrilled for her.

Some people have been vocal about not wanting her to win again. EW anonymously interviewed some voters and one of them explicitly said she'd won enough. I was actually starting to feel bad for her because there really does seem to be resentment towards her and she seems like she's not only a very talented woman, but a class act who the people who work with her love.

She actually holds the record for most Oscar losses.
