David and Scott are former competitors and training partners and David used to be a tv commentator too. I think this was staged. Agnes always seem to bomb the lp, so David got his buddy Scott to blab the bogus excuse on air to try and lessen the blow of a usual meltdown, only this time in prime time tv.

couldn't it be a case of a coach saying something 'off the record,' trusting that the broadcaster would have the discretion not to say it on air? i know of several examples (non-skating) where an athlete or coach said something and then was stunned to find it in print.

maybe santee was just insufficiently media-savvy? i imagine where microphones are believed to be absent, much harsher statements are being exchanged / confided all the time.

Well, this is the same Santee who, when commenting for the 88 Olympics, greeted Brian Orser with, "Brian, you skated a great long program, but you got second. Reaction?" You'd think he'd have learned a few tricks in the following 24 years....

Bump

Will Alissa go for a 2x-3t at Worlds? She hasn't done one yet, and Worlds is the last comp left. The 3t is too good of a jump for her, so I think she should reintegrate it somewhere else.

Personally, I think she could go for the following -

3z-2t
2x [skip the 3t combo]
3f
x-3z
x-3t-2t [instead of the second solo 2x]
x-3l
x-3l-2t-2l

She would only lose a point or two by not doing the 2x-3t combo but since she's not getting it anyway ...

Santee was brand new to commentation in 88. How was he supposed to know how to react when Jim McKay was constantly saying "Orser is second" into his ear-piece when David went up to Orser? If anyone was to blame for that incident it should be placed on McKay and the producers.

Santee and Scott competed against each other for several years in the 80s. I'm sure they feel like old pals when they run into one another, and David feels comfortable enough around Scott to say things off the top of his head. I wouldn't be surprised if Dave was taken aback that Scott would repeat verbatim what he said "off the record" on the air. Maybe now Dave knows not to tell Scott everything about his students when he's around Scott.

Another possible Alissa jump layout:

3Z-2T
3T-3T
3F
x-3Z
x-2A 2T 2L
x-3L
x-She could do whatever she wanted here depending on what she did so far.

Solo 2A, or solo 3T if she doubled the combo in the 3T3T combo, or 3S if she wants to go for 7 triples(after skating a clean so far :P) , or 3L2T combo if she missed/fell on the first 2A combo or missed/fell on the 3T of the 3T/3T combo.

.

This is such an important point. When the commentators are so heavily criticized, people forget that the producers are in their ears. For example, talking too much during exhibitions...someone is telling them they have to!

I'm also in favor of dumping the 2axel-3toe. She should do what is within her capabilities, and just aim to do it well. Six good triples in the freeskate would stand her in good stead with the judges.

Alissa does slow down for the jump entry but the rest of the time, stroking, etc., she is not slow.

I was there this year at Nationals and I know that Alissa had a few problems but speed across the ice was definitely not one of them. She looked pretty darn fast to me.

I was there too. :) So much fun! She has good speed and SS.

To me, this is one of the biggest improvements she's made with Yuka and Jason. I remember seeing her in 05/06 at Skate America and though she won silver I was worried about how slow and cautious she seemed. She's no speed demon, but she's twice as fast as she was and the ice coverage is better, too.

This might be good for her:

3lutz2toe
3flip
3loop2toe2loop
-
2axel - 2axel
3lutz
3loop
3toe

Essentially her 2010 layout. Her axel looks better now.

^^ Yeah, that seems more realistic to me.

Here's a video of Ashley practicing her Black Swan FS over the summer when she was just learning the choreo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8A2nfgXrEU&t=4m10s

(from her vlog)

What's amazing is that when she is asked to increase the distance between her lowest rib and hip bone, she does exactly that. Such body awareness!
