I saw Alissa live and in no way she is slow. Caroline, yes, definitely slow, especially on the footwork but not Alissa.

I watched the FS live in San Jose, and though Caroline slowed down on the footwork, there were moments when she was actually going quite fast into her jumps, i.e. her triple lutz.

Alissa skates quietly, so it doesn't appear that she's skating fast until you see her on the ice. Same with Agnes, actually. She's so tall that it takes just three effortless strokes before she's at the other end of the rink.

Caroline has certainly improved in many areas, speed included. I've been in San Jose the whole week and agree with you about Alissa--she can be very fast. And Agnes is a powerful skater, not only in SS but in jumps, when she is on.

Czisny skates like Kwan - they don't look fast because they skate and stroke so effortlessly.

Exactly. Not that I've seen Kwan skate live but I believe you. Czisny floats on the ice.

I did in exhibition-and she was fast. The Russians that were there like Slutskaya skated faster but Michelle was pretty fast.

I don't quite get this; what do you mean exactly? Kostner looks effortless AND fast. I always thought the same for Arakawa too.

I suppose it's one of those things you'd have to see in person. It's amazing, really.

I've seen Kostner live and she is fast but not effortless. That is, her use of the blade is masterful but the awkwardness of her body from the ankle up interferes with the effortless effect, if that makes sense.

^Yes I understand; Kostner seems alot more powerful though. I guess she has much longer limbs to carry around. Either way, both are lovely to watch.

But Czisny doesn't come close to the depth of edge that Kostner achieves. And Kostner just flies. And if hers is not effortless skating skills, I don't know what is.

Sorry to bring him up in a US ladies thread, but Patrick Chan.

Kostner and Arakawa (think Anna Rechnio as another obvious example) have powerful edges, and they can gather speed from few strokes. However, there is a certain level of awkwardness to the upper body as they stroke, because of the use of power for the push. They are effortless from the ankle down.

Kwan and Czisny have smooth edges. Their stroking never look forceful but instead appear like spreading butter. They remain elegant while gathering speed. So they are effortless in stroking overall, although they don't gather as much speed. Kwan's Fields of Gold is perfect in demonstrating this.

IMO, Patrick Chan really embodies the power of Kostner's edges and the smoothness of Kwan's edges. While I used to think Takahashi is phenomenal, Chan is just out of this world.

But I digress...

I saw her do Fields of Gold live and she even did a backwards change of edge spiral right in front of me. :P

In an absolute sense, no. Compared to Kwan, yes. :EVILLE:

For me, the "effortless" quality comes from how they hold their torso as they stroke around the ice. Czisny's torso is almost like a solid block, her back never pumps. I always thought she was slow until I saw her live and realized she covered almost as much ice as Rochette and possibly more than Lepisto.

Kostner is not as ... placid with her upper body movements, so the effect is different.
