I thought a new thread for the new year/season?

So far:

LOVING Kaia Kanepi and her form/win in Brisbane. I saw her semi/final wins over Schiavone/Hantuchova, and she was IMPRESSIVE! She seems like a really nice gal, has an awesome serve and has lost a fair bit of weight - I just pray for a healthy year for her. :D

Murray eased to the title in Brisbane; Tsonga won in Doha (Monfils beat Nadal in Semis).

The Czechs won the Hopman Cup - Kvitova beat Wozniacki in a good three-setter.

Zheng Jie won her first title in six years(!) in Auckland, beating Pennetta.

Raonic v Tipsarevic in the Chennai final.

Serena, Kim, Flavia, Federer, all injured already!

My picks for 2012:

Murray will win a slam.

Wozniacki will win a slam ;)

I hope you're wrong! :drama:

Anyway, I agree re: Kanepi. Great to see her back and doing so well.

YAAAY Milos Raonic and Canadian Tennis! With Nestor winning doubles this weekend too :D Plus it's also only the first weekend of the season, Canadian Tennis could see accomplishments that we haven't ever seen the likes of, I'm so excited and with the London Olympics coming, Raonic/Nestor could very well win an Olympic Medal with their serves and the Olympics being held on grass, they will be VERY difficult to beat.

Way to go Milos! What a match. Agree kylet3 Nestor/Raonic would be interesting to say the least. Let hope for good health for all. Get well soon Roger and the rest and then stay that way.:)

I like this description: "The 31-year-old Schiavone, who competes with the gleeful passion of a ball kid invited to warm up a pro . . . ." :)

^

All the top ladies are making sluggish starts. Kvitova, Woz, Li only just squeeing through to the Sydney QF's; Zvonareva out, Kuznetsova out. Venus out of OZ :(

Murray will NOT win a slam. Loves_Shizuka, WHAT are u thinking!

Very interesting that he's now working with new coach Ivan Lendl!

That was a great match for Milos - He made it very exciting to watch tennis and I have a feeling if he can stay healthy he can be number one.. best talent we have had in a while..

Milos still has a LONG way to go if he's to be number one, he's got to get a far better and more consistent backhand and improve his side to side movement, he's lanky but you can tell he's added some muscle in the off season for sure. I think him and Nestor with their serves would cause fits for any team playing at the Olympics which is why I'm excited, I think they both are legitimate medal contenders which would be another big boost to Tennis in Canada since funding is measured by success at the Olympics.

Wozniacki lost a 6-3 5-4 lead to Radwanska and then apparently injured her wrist in the 3rd set. Aga won 2-6 7-5 6-2.

Petkovic is out of OZ with a stress fracture. She was a QFinalist last year. It means Serena will be seeded 12, meaning the top four seeds avoid her for a further round.

When can Petra take over the #1 ranking? She has less points to defend in Oz than Wozniacki. She crushed Hantuchova yesterday.

Petkovic :( Hope she gets better soon. She's so witty and fun.

Kvitova will become no.1 if she wins Sydney.

If/when he develops his serve & volley game to be a consistent weapon (this is his way out of the career-limited "ball bashers club"), Raonic will need a "perfect storm" scenario (old guard retired/new guard not yet soup) -- ala Roddick in 2003 -- to achieve #1. Not too far fetched, got to say.

And, yes, there is the fitness issue. Find a way to avoid injuries (/ become the next Philippousis) and find a fitness program that builds endurance. Case in point: Milos followed up his stellar last week's run with a blowout loss -- 6-2/6-1 -- to Mardy Fish today. Mardy has a similar game, interestingly, but hopefully his "lost opportunities" career won't be another similarity for MR circa 2017.

(Kudos to Mardy, though, for this nice win.)

List of top athletes out of the australian open is getting bigger than that in the tournament in ladies section.
