Novak was NOT impressive, but well done on grinding out a win. Was a bizarrely flat match overall.

Novak wins and does he look relieved or what. That was not an easy match for him and at times he looked pretty ordinary. I'm sure he will be glad for a day off tomorrow to re-group prior to his Qtr-final match.

Now lets see if Roger can complete his comeback as well :)

Wawrinka-Tsonga is a :swoon: match. They certainly are a fine looking pair of gentlemen.

You are certainly getting your fill of these two as they head towards a 5th set!!!

Congrats to Sam Stouser but Sloane Stephens could have taken that - serving for the 1st set and then breaking Stouser twice in the 2nd set to get to 5-4 before losing her serve to love to hand the match to Stouser!! From the bits I saw of that I really don't see Stouser as a major contender for this championship but maybe this was just an off day for her. I still see Sharapova as the out and out favourite at the moment as she is playing really well.

Erm.. Clay is her favourite surface

Are you referring to Stosur? If clay is her favorite surface, more power to her but it is the surface she's been the most successful on is Hard courts. She may have one title of clay(singles).

I didn't get a chance to the see the Stephens/Stosur match. All I can say is that Sloane will learn how to play the big points better. She's only 19 and has to learn to play through matches like today.

Hopefully she'll continue to get tougher mentally, but her game can take her to a top 10 player on the WTA.

Also, 16 year old Taylor Townsend is now the #1 ranked Girls player. She seeded #1 at the French and won her first match today. Taylor is a leftie who likes to serve/volley and she's a developing a Serena Williams like serve. Her coach is former player Kathy Rinaldi. Does anyone remember Kathy Rinaldi?

She's had plenty of success on clay though, including appearances in both the semis and finals at Roland Garros. And I'd hardly call her finals appearance "lucky", considering that IIRC she was one of the favourites going in, and then beat Henin, Serena, and Jankovic in succession to get there.

Stosur is good on clay because it is the surface which promotes her game the best; she can use the kick serve to its full advantage because of the high bounce, has time to run around her BH to hit her (into-out) FH, it gives her time for her long(er) stroke production, and is the surface where her amazing spin, generated by amazing shoulder strength and rotation, is most wicked.

She's an RG runner-up, a SFinalist and now QFinalist, won Charleston (yes green clay, but still) with a devastating win over a peak Zvonareva (one of the best single performances of the last few years IMO) has been a Rome finalist and has beaten Henin on the stuff. That's more than "lucky".

Yes, I know she is the USO Champ, but I think clay is where she feels happiest (and at least as) comfortable as hard courts. She is known for loving red clay, as it is traditionally unusual for Australians to do so.

YAY Tsonga finally won! :D Great exchange at the net - I do feel for Stan; he gave it his all (unlike others today)

More vodka needed.

Li out to Shvedova :( Devastated for Na BUT I do genuinely like Shvedova, who's had a torrid two years with MAJOR injuries, so big congrats to her. Also, I met her very briefly at the Birmingham tournament two years ago and she's LOVELY. So I can live with this result

Sharapova making heavy weather of it but winning in the 3rd against Zakopolova (who has such a cool game btw)

Wowza, was Na injured to lose those last two sets like that? Then again, she is wildly inconsistent so I suppose it's not as shocking, but I thought she had a good week going. Too bad.

Man, Sharapova really is making it hard on herself isn't she?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Dickie Gasquet.
