Supposedly, Novikov did the dress rehearsal performance with Khoklova already injured and in pain, and required surgery. Perhaps in order to show Khoklova off best, they felt pairing her with an uninjured person would be in her best interest, and Zhulin had choreographed the program, so stepped in easily.

A summary of Episode 1.I just tried to make Google translate more understandable. :) The sentences in the curved brackets are not from the original text,i just aded some explanations.
The First Stage ("Winter"). Details
The project opened the pair team of Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin. "It's very interesting to try ourselves in dances - said Maxim. - In sports, this was impossible to do." 2006 Olympic Champions demonstrated emotional performance with difficult technical elements, including a triple throw jump. Tatiana Totmianina said that this dance is a love story: "This was first love, and today we experienced it again on the ice." The judges unanimously put the highest score and noted both technical skill and expressiveness of the duo. "This is one of the best pair team in history, but now they skated much liberated" - said Anton Sikharulidze. "I saw a great skating - added Elena Tchaikovskaya. - They,ve grown and changed very much ."

Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, who have left the amateur sport after the 2010 Olympics, admitted that they had already missed the excitement and emotions of the competitions. Their cheerful and igniting performance impressed on the audience, but the judge found the small defects in the execution. The most critical was Igor Bobrin- the distinguished trainer of Russia. He explained about his "5.9" for technique and artistry that the couple failed to preserve the mood of the dance from the beginning to the end . But Tatiana Tarasova saw no defects in the dance and wasn’t stingy in her praises. She noted the quality of executed twizzles and original lifts.

Naomi Lang and Peter Chernyshev had chosen the soundtrack song from the movie "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath". "We have ventured to take this subject only because Naomi was not Russian figure skater, and Barbara Brylska also was not Russian actress(she plays the main female character in the movie and is famous Polish actress) - said Peter. - We,ll try to penetrate." "I'm trying to interpret this Russian film on the ice as I understand it, - added Naomi. - I hope the judges will appreciate my efforts." Elena Chaikovskaya praised the interpretation and that the American figure skater understands the Russian soul. "It was very musical, they didn’t make any mistakes: neither in feelings, nor in the steps" - she said. Tatiana Tarasova agreed with her: "The choreographic language is very complicated. Movement followed from one to another. Absolutely amazing!"

Olympic champions Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov did not participate in competitions for six years after the triumphant end of their amateur career in 2006 at the Olympic Games in Turin. Their expressive and swift dance, raised the audience. But the jury have some demands about the performance. Elena Tchaikovsky -about the choreography: "I am against the beginning of the performance. I would like to see this elegant and light pair using different effect and other ways to win the public’s love” And the Honored Sport’s Master of USSR Natalia Bestemyanova -about the technique: "It seemed to me that the guys were tired at the finale. Not enough time for the team to attire the number." Tatiana Navka, on her behalf said that she received great pleasure from the number and finds the choreography completely justified.

The Lithuanian skaters Margarita Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas are couple not only on the ice, but in real life. They admitted that the cup of professionals takes time and effort, but stressed on that when you have a beloved home, where you feel good, you can restore your strength. Their “Sad Waltz" by Jean Sibelius turned out truly wintry with the falling snow and a bench in the snowdrift. "The program was innovative, - said Anton Sikharulidze. - There were elements that we call the raisins (something extraordinary and original, or something like the cherry on the top of cake or Sundae)." Elena Chaikovskaya, who was one of their coaches once upon a time, noticed the lyrical component in the performance and thanked the athletes for "retaining the higher purpose of figure skating - to carry on the state of empathy, something that not too many athletes can show."

Irina Lobacheva and Ruslan Goncharov, in contrast to previous participants, did not skate together during their amateur’s career This couldn’t go on without affecting their scores. "It would be wrong to other duets to give the guys all 6.0 , - explained Natalia Bestemyanova. - There is a roughness in the holds and the lifts. The guys look great, they compliment each other. I think in the future it will be great." And Igor Bobrin criticized the choreographer: the beginning and the ending were very well thought out, but the middle of the performance lacked of a relationships The skaters themselves were satisfied with their debut. "We can work together, it's interesting, we learned a lot from each other," - said Irina.

Bulgarian ice dancers Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski combined for their performance "Oh, frost, frost," and "Welcome to Burlesque" and make active use of the requisite, including a broom and a chair. However, not all attributes have played in their favor. Natalia Bestemyanova did not like that at the end Maxim’s character threw away the feather that was left for him, thereby abandoning his dreams (Maxim‘s answer was ”But she is very jealous“ which was just right considering that the song ended with” I have very jealous wife” ) Tatiana Tarasova welcomed the use of the requisite, noting that she also created lots of performances with objects. But the famous coach thought that the end seemed glued to performance , and this affected the second score.

The project was a test not only for skaters, but also for their coaches. Jana Khokhlova supposed to skate together with Vitaly Novikov, but two days before the start of the project he was seriously injured and unable to compete. And then Alexander Zhulin and Ilia Averbukh came to help. Jana Khokhlova went out on the ice with Alexander Zhulin. "Unforgettable experience - said Alexander after the performance. - It ‘s been a long time since I did this, to be precise - since 2006. Jana is light like air puff, and to ride with her was just a pleasure." "For me is a big honor - to skate with such a great coach," - added Ian. Igor Bobrin praised the performance, which like a good book, was unpredictable until the very end.

Elena Leonova and Andrei Khvalko is a pair who have achieved not in the amateur but in the professional figure skating. Their main venture was based on their professionalism. "When two professionals skate , the frame is more extended, so you can come up with new ideas, new images. Probably this will occur in the process," - said Andrew. The pair demonstrated the most difficult elements in their first performance : 2.5 throw jump , lifts , effective . And even a fall in the snow looked quite organically. But the judge interpreted it differently. In the eyes of Tatiana Tarasova, the fall does not prevent the victory. But Elena Chaikovskaya was positive that : A pair of such a professional level can not fall like that. "Even if you fall - jumped up. And you were lost" - she said. However, Anton Sikharulidze found the explanation of such a loss: "The last time they fell was 18 years ago."

Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov showed excellent physical shape, perfectly fulfilling the different elements of pair skating: the triple throw jump, death spiral, the upper lifts. The jury unanimously placed the highest marks for technique. Presentation of the program was also highly rated: Natalia Bestemyanova just took off ten points for the music. "I was left with the feeling that this music is not in harmony with Alex," - she explained. Anton Sikharulidze stressed on the technique, including the sophisticated descent from the lifts and the ability to convey the atmosphere: "I felt like I was in Gorky Park." Tatiana Tarasova thanked Alexander Zhulin for the excellent choreography.
