She learned this morning that her mother is very ill and is returning to Japan.

:( That's really awful news - I wonder what illness could be sudden enough for Mao to learn about it just now and serious enough for her to withdraw and leave for Japan immediately. :( I hope her mum feels better soon. My prayers and best wishes go to the entire family.
