I am wishing good health and full recovery for Mao's mother. Hopefully, the support and love of her daughter and all the rest of her family will help her for the best! Get well soon!

Oh, so it's an ongoing illness. :(

Wait a sec...I thought that the illness just came on, thus the reason for Mao suddenly leaving Quebec City today. So Mao's mom has been ill for a while? This sounds more serious & sad than originally thought. :(

It is not officially confirmed, but one of the Japanese fans at Mao's fan forum said that there was an article published earlier this year claiming that Mao's mum was ill. However, because the newspaper that published the rumour was not exactly reputable, most of the fans ignored it.

Cinquanta said in the press release that Mao's mum was "critically ill", which might imply that she was ill before but the illness unexpectedly
take a turn for the worse. :(

ETA: Confirmed by @LynnRutherford: "A member of JSF's contingent here says Asada's mother was ill prior to this event&the situation has grown worse prompting Mao to return home"

I hope the situation's not as bad as it sounds and Mao's mum recovers soon.

Sending positive thoughts to Mao's whole family. I know how stressful it can be when one's parents are gravely ill, and it is very tough.

Didn't this happen with Irina Slutskaya at a G-P final....she withdrew because of her mom's kidney illness? I seem to remember something to that effect. This was a year or two before Ira herself became ill, so the 2002-2003 period.

I think she withdrew from 2003 Worlds.

I figured she was so skinny at Worlds 2011 due to stress from the big earthquake, but she is still too thin and now I understand where the stress must have been coming from. My heart goes out to poor Mao. . .

The two-time world champion and her coach, Nobuo Sato, have returned to Japan, where Asada's mother has fallen critically ill. The Japanese Skating Federation has requested that the media make no further inquiries at this time.

A member of the Japanese Skating Federation said that although the skater's mother had been ill prior to Asada's departure from Japan, the situation has since grown worse, prompting Asada's withdrawal.
