JSF announced that Mao came to tell them she's withdrawing because of her mother's illness. She stayed strong and said that she's sorry about causing trouble to everyone.

It was reported earlier this year that the main reasons she lost weight were the pressure from the media and her mother's illness. If that's true, I hope she doesn't lose more weight. I hope the media will leave her alone once she arrives back in Japan.

Praying for Mao and Mai's family.

Mao has nothing to apologize for. Prayers to the Asada family.

THIS ARTICLE SPECFICALLY STATES: "Her spot won't be filled by another skater leaving the women's singles field at five skaters."

I know sometimes articles are wrong, but this is likely accurate information.

Oh, so it's an ongoing illness. :(

The ISU confirmed at a press conference this morning that the spot will not be filled by another skater.

Sad. Doesn't sound like she has much time left if Mao is giving up gold at the GPF instead of waiting a few days. Thoughts and prayers.

An ongoing illness that's now critical is definitely cause for concern. I hope I am mistaken and that her condition will improve, and wish Mao and her family all the best during this very difficult time.

How sad for Mao! I hope her mother recovers soon. Skating has to be secondary at this point.:(
