I just heard that Mao's mother passed away Friday morning due to liver cirrhosis.
Her mother was 48 years old. So, so sad. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. :(:(:(

This is devastating news. Her mom was only 48 years old. My heart goes out to Mai, Mao and their loved ones. :(

Icenetwork is reporting Mao did not arrive home in time to say goodbye :(
That must make this even more difficult.

How awful for Mao! She is just 21 years old. Losing her mom at such a young age has to be extremely difficult - it's difficult at ANY age:(

My deepest sympathy to Mao and her family. At least I am glad she flew back to Japan before her mom passed away, so she will not have any regrets.

(((((Mao)))))

ETA: Just saw the post that reported that she could not get back home in time to say goodbye. Sad!

Vash, I think the reports are that she didn't make it before her mom passed; she was still on the flight :(

I've met Mrs. Asada several times. She was very down-to-earth, very friendly, funny and very supportive of other skaters -- especially little ones. She absolutely loved to watch her daughters skate. She was a beautiful person.

R.I.P.

My heart breaks for Mao. Maybe the folks at the GP can hold a moment of silence for her.
That would be nice. They did that at 2005 U.S. Nationals for Angela Nikodinov's mom.
