Sky News ~Queen Celebrates 60 Years On The Throne (http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16163744)

The Queen has marked 60 years on the throne by making an unprecedented renewal of her pledge to serve the people.

In the message released by Buckingham Palace, the Queen said: "I dedicate myself anew to your service".

She continued: "Today, as I mark 60 years as your Queen, I am writing to thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you have given to me and Prince Philip over these years and to tell you how deeply moved we have been to receive so many kind messages about the Diamond Jubilee.

The Queen has been on the throne for 60 years

"In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighbourliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign and which my family and I look forward to seeing in many forms as we travel throughout the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth.

"I hope also that this Jubilee year will be a time to give thanks for the great advances that have been made since 1952 and to look forward to the future with clear head and warm heart as we join together in our celebrations. I send my sincere good wishes to you all."

wasnt there a prince john who was the subject of a mini series on pbs iirc?

Ooops!! You're right. I forget about little Prince John due to him being shut away at Wood Farm due to his Epilipsey and not really a part of the Family because of that. Thank God we've come a very long way in that regards to illinesses such as Prince John's. We still have a way to go, but we've also come a very long way too.

So it was four sons that Queen Mary had to say Goodbye to due to death and/or exile. Thanks for the reminder mlp.

I loved that mini-series. Miranda Richardson played Queen Mary. The brother "Georgie" who was closest to Prince John grew up to be the Duke of Kent. He died in a plane crash during World War II.

I loved it, too. The only parts that really bothered me were how they portrayed the Russian Imperial Family, specifically Empress Alexandra. From all I've learned about them over the years, Alexandra was far from the cold high-maintenance person they showed on Prince John. And she was hardly a stranger to the BRF... she practically grew up amongst all of them.

ITA, that bit about having the right shoes especially seemed out of character for Alix based upon the stuff I've read about her.

I must say though that Miranda Richardson felt spot-on in portraying Queen Mary (once again, just based on bios and histories I've read......) ;)

Very true. She was among Queen Victoria's "favorites".

One more performance of God Save The Queen in honour of the Diamond Jubilee and w/an extra treat of the New Zealand National Anthem. Both performed by Hayley Westenra and her lovely voice. :)

YouTube ~ God Save The Queen & God Defend New Zealand - Hayley Westenra (NZ War Memorial Ceremony London 2006) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=fL9CFbtwUWc&feature=endscreen)

You'll see HM, Prince Andrew, The Duke of Kent, Prince Phillip and other Royals at various moments of the video.

edited to add...The lyrics to God Defend New Zealand...

God of nations! at Thy feet

In the bonds of love we meet,

Hear our voices, we entreat,

God defend our Free Land.

Guard Pacific's triple star,

From the shafts of strife and war,

Make her praises heard afar,

God defend New Zealand

Today was the start of the Duchess of Cambridge's role as a patron of the Charities she's decided to support. Kate visited the National Portrait Gallery and the Lucien Freud exhibit in her capacity as Patron of the NPG. No cameras were allowed inside, but these two Official Portraits were released...

Wasn't Alex one of Queen Victoria's many, many, grandchildren, or am I mistaken?

Kate looks fabulous. I think her hair is a bit shorter and darker and her eye make up is softer looking. The whole package is fabulous. I wonder about the heels though. When she starts doing the 4 or 5 engagements a day like her mother in law did, she may end up in lower heels!

Wasn't Alex one of Queen Victoria's many, many, grandchildren, or am I mistaken?Yes, she was. She was Princess Alice's 4th daughter. And to put in a modern frame of reference, Prince Philip's maternal grandmother was Princess Alice's 1st daughter, Victoria. So Alix was Philip's great-aunt.

You're probably correct. It is really all about me. I don't want 5 inch heels so I want her to make 2 1/2 inch heels popular again. :D
