the second part was very sad; but I am now intrigued about the hidden jewels that was never found...Some of it was found in the 30's. Here's a list (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/jewelslist.html) of what they found. There are pictures at the bottom. But it doesn't say if there were more that were smuggled out and still hidden.

I have no idea where those particular jewels are. Chances are, if they were not auctioned or privately sold, they were broken up. The gems would have been sold individually and the metal would have been melted down & used for something else. But they could have also been stolen & hidden somewhere, as there were reports of some of the jewelry missing that way. The family had so much jewelry that I don't think there will ever be a full accounting of what they had and where it was hidden, let alone what happened to all of it.

I have to point out though, that you can see, in the top picture, the Empress' & the Grand Duchess' Order of St. Catherine stars & badges (without the ribbon). Here's what they look like (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Saint_Catherine).

Official Website of the Norwegian Royal Family ~ Christmas photos at the Palace (http://www.kongehuset.no/c27262/nyhet/vis.html?tid=96001)

The Crown Princely kids are getting so big. Time really does fly.

And on a personal note...As someone who does embroidery as one of her many hobbies, the work on Queen Sonja's "top" of the National "Costume" she's wearing had me drooling in envy. Gorgeous, gorgeous work there.

I highly encourage everyone to watch this series on royal jewels. The first part is focused on Danish & Swedish tiaras, and the second is about the Romonov jewels. Even though it's in Danish, most of the interviews were done in English, and a few in French, and there were enough interviews that one could grasp what they were talking about the whole time. And the subjects of the interviews were Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Silvia of Sweden & Princess Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg for the first part, and Prince Michael of Kent, Princess Olga Andreevna Romanov, Prince Michael of Greece & a few distant relations I forgot in the second.

Each segment is an hour long, and so worth it!

What an extraordinary documentary!
For someone with a dual fascination with Royal History and Gemology, this was stunning.

It's never a "good time" for something such as this to happen, but Christmas time has to be the worst timing for a serious health crisis to take place. Especially when it happens to someone in his 90's. Regardless of how good of health the person is in.

The Queen must be so scared and worried right now. :(

edited to add...Some lovely news. The Royal Family of Liechtenstein welcomed a new member earlier this week.
