This! Diana was human like the rest of us. She had her strengths and weaknesses; she did great things and stupid things. It is obvious that she loved her sons and that they felt loved and accepted. For that alone she has my respect. She is / was not a perfect goddess, but who among us is? I think we should let her rest in peace and let Kate get on with being Kate. She too has her strengths and weaknesses, and I suspect will do great things and stupid things. After all, don't we all?

Yes. This consumes way too much of some people's lives, IMO.

Kate has so much more scrutiny, too. Photos and video were not immediately streamed to a worldwide audience in the 1980s. Diana didn't have to deal with every moment being broadcast so people could catch every imperfect expression.

So true - we relied on magazine articles and gasp, books back then, and the UK tabloids didn't have the reach they do now.

But, the good news is that the Royal Family - William in particular - has a lot of experience with this, and Kate has been around them long enough to be prepared for just about anything. I'm sure it's hard when it goes from maybe to reality, but if she has the support of her family and his - which Diana didn't - she should be fine. She's not a 19 year old nursery school teacher.

how is the poppy canadian?

I never said that, which by adding in the words version of, I thought made that perfectly clear.

Did you click on that link before deciding to ask that? Because if you had, you would have seen what I was talking about. In the picture that goes along w/that article, we see Camilla, Kate and Sophie on the Balcony across from the UK National Cenetaph. All three Royal Ladies are wearing versions of the Poppy. No idea where Camilla got hers, but Kate is wearing what is considered the British version of the Poppy and Sophie is wearing the Canadian version of the Poppy.

Which I found surprising once it had been pointed out, as you would think that Sophie would be wearing the British version of the Poppy at the British National Service of Remembrance.

And BTW, the Poppy is Canadian. Just as it's British, Australian, Francophone, Belgian and et al. It's a Global symbol of Remembrance and therefore belongs to all who honour and remember those who have both served and offered the Supreme Sacrifice.

My apologies to the rest of you for taking the thread off a bit, but as the Niece of WWII Vets, that hit a sour point w/me.

Ummm...that picture of William's left hand is...unfortunate.

I believe the left hand belongs to William's father, Prince Charles........which is why he gave Kate those earrings.;) ;)

And another thing to keep in mind...

If you're a member in good standing of Girl Guides/Girl Scouts, you are able to stay at Olive House, The British World Centre. Of course you'd have to do some checking, but last I understood, so long as you are a member of WAGGGS*** in good standing, you can stay at any of the World Centres.

Something to keep in mind. :)

Great new title Flo. Now I just have to remember we've got a new thread title. :D

From Monday night in NYC...

zimbo ~ Princess Madeleine and Prince Daniel of Sweden attend Gala Dinner in NYC for Swedish American Chamber of Commerce Conference Meeting (http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/ISuZVqP4EVS/Swedish+American+Chamber+Commerce+Pre+Conference/kBCdEhzwVT2)

Much better dress choice this time around for Madeleine.

edited to add...Fergus, I got a taste of what you must have felt like last weekend when all those Royals were in NYC. I watch CTV Toronto news because our local news just out and out sucks and at least I get real news from Toronto. Anyway...Guess where Albert and Charlene were last night and I'm guessing today as well?

They officially opened the Canadian stop of the Princess Grace Exhibit at the TIFF Lightbox last night.

Never knew they were coming. Grrrrr!!!!!

I also kept meaning to post this last week, but forgot. HRH Princess Elisabeth of Belgium celebrated her 10th Birthday last week. She will be Belgium's first Queen Regent, but for now is a very cute young lady. The Palace released these photos to mark her 10th Birthday. Hosted by the PicturePush website...

W/her proud parents, Crown Prince Philippe and Crown Princess Mathilde (http://picturepush.com/public/6790591)

Elisabeth and her Father (http://picturepush.com/public/6790594)

Lovely close up of the two of them (http://picturepush.com/public/6790615)

Close up of the little Princess (http://picturepush.com/public/6790613)

Close up of Elisabeth w/her Parents (http://picturepush.com/public/6790595)

Time flies, doesn't it? She's growing up into a lovely young lady. She also made her first official speech last week when, alongside her Parents, she opened the Princess Elisabeth Hospital for Children in Brussels. She's already performed a couple of duties alongside of either one of or both of her Parents, but this was the first time she'd actually performed a speech.

I really like the way Phillipe and Mathilde are grooming Elisabeth for her future role and think now is the perfect age for her to start doing the odd thing here and there. At least IMO.

Lovely family photos!

Is there no possibility of the little Princess having a little brother? I mean is Belgium like Sweden-where the crown passes to the oldest irregardless of sex? :)

I will be the first to :40beers: & :cheer2: them when it happens, but I personally am gonna bet the farm that they're gonna wait until after the Jubilee/Olympics. Just have a feeling. :)

Although securing the line of succession would be the most FABULOUS Jubilee gift they could give HMQ!

And if the first one is a girl, b/c of the succession change adopted at the CHOGM, they're totally gonna name it Elizabeth! :biggrinbo That would be the most awesome tribute imaginable!

I'd rather they name a first girl Diana. That'd be a lovely tribute to William's mother. What succession change? What does CHOGM stand for? Do you mean that in Britain the throne will pass to the eldest child of the monarch irregardless of sex? I hope so-it'd be about time imo. ETA: Nevermind! I looked it up-per wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_of_succession_to_the_British_throneAt the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia, the leaders of the Commonwealth realms agreed to introduce legislation to end male primogeniture of descendants of Charles, Prince of Wales, and to allow heirs to the throne to marry Roman Catholics.[7]

I did not know either that they introduced legislation to allow the heirs to the throne to marry Roman Catholics! That is progress indeed-and again it's about time. Roman Catholics may still not inherit the throne however. I feel for the Roman Catholic Stuart line that was excluded long ago-their descendants are still around-the Jacobite line. This is all quite fascinating!

She actually has three (I think? Two for sure). Belgium is first child is the heir regardless of gender, so Princess Elisabeth will be Queen Regent sometime in the future.

As far as her siblings go...At one point, the running joke was that the Crown Prince and Princess just had to look at each other and there'd be an Baby Announcement from the Palace. :D

Crown Princess Mathilde needs to fire the royal dermatologist. Her face is overfilled and generally overdone.

The Royal Newlyweds of Bhutan are paying their first State Visit to Japan. Also the first State Visit of any Head of State since the tragic events of March in Japan.

Considering what would have to happen for a Stuart restoration, at that point they could probably say "We're having a Catholic monarch and that's that." As I don't see any more civil wars in the offing, probably not something they have to worry about (poor Stuarts...)

Not sure I'd give much credence to In Touch. They fail to note the Queen already has a great grandchild and a second (really and officially) on the way.

And were they the ones with the "Kate has a brain tumor" story a couple of weeks ago?
