Ave Maria is another overused music in FS, but there are so many versions of it that I have not yet gotten tired of it. In competitions, I like T&M's SP the best. This poll is limited to exhibition or pro routines because it is hard to compare eligible skating with exhibitions.

Please pick your favorite 3 Ave Maria exhibitions/pro routines for this poll.

Can we make separate categories for the Schubert and the Bach-Gounod music?

I voted Baiul because I remember how much I loved that program at the time. That little, skinny 15 year old with such amazing interpretive instincts and a body that totally moved to the music.

I'd also like to put in a honorable mention to the short program Totmianina and Marinin did in 2005. It managed to be a lovely interpretive piece even with required elements.

In the original post I specifically stated that I did not want to compare eligible skating with exhibtion/pro since they are so different. I have listed many types of Ave Maria music for the poll- Schubert, Gounod, vocals by various artists, so I don't see the point in listing just Schubert & Gounod. If you want to start a thread like that, you can, of course. BTW I did mention T&M's SP as my most favorite competition program to this music, but it is not an option in this poll.

Jeffrey Buttle's "Ave Maria" was so beautiful. His every move on the ice is so graceful. Plus his "Ave Maria" s music is so different with drums. Fab skate Jeff.

Absolutely hands down goes to Peggy Fleming. This is her doing it at the Carlo Fassi tribute. When a piece of music takes a meaning of its own, an athlete/artist can do wonders. Get out the Kleenex.

If I could choose just one, it would be the interpretation by Baiul too. I chose her, Weir and the Protopopovs.

However, when it comes to competitions, it would be the sp by Sishkova/Naumov. Was it in 1997? I'm not sure. I love the way the music interpreted Ave Maria and the way S/N skated to it. One of the most lovely programs I've ever seen in competition.

It was in 1996. I liked their performance at the Centennial more than at worlds, in spite of a mistake on the jump by Naumov. It was a beautiful performance. It is listed in the 'competition' poll.

I think I don't like any of those. Please, no more Ave Maria.

The only one I can watch is Petrova&Tikhonov's because it's not to the most famous Ave Maria's.

Funny. It (Pet-Tik's) is the only one I did not like at all, and I do like them as a pair. Just not this version of AM.

I haven't seen that Centennial performance, but I am curious now. I hope I can find it on YouTube.

Just found it on YouTube. So happy to have that program from another event. Thanks for mentioning it! The Centennial performance is as lovely as the Worlds performance.

Thanks for posting that skate by Peggy Fleming at the Carlo Fassi Tribute, Louise. I recall having seen it then, but it's great to see it again. Peggy was definitely emotional in the interview describing why the song had such meaning for her, and especially how much her father and Carlo meant to her (and how the song and her skating connected to both of them).

I voted for Johnny, Rudy, and Oksana. I love all of Johnny's skates to Ave Maria, especially these:

Each of the above performances are skated somewhat differently to the same music. That to me is the interesting thing about Johnny as a skater and an artist. His moves are so natural and effortless with beautiful flow and grace ... maybe due to the spontaneity of movement and emotion he expresses in the moment. He's soulful, free, and inspiring, especially in his exhibitions (uninhibited by the strictures of rules). Johnny said in an interview late last year, "I have the skin* of a hippo, and the heart of a hummingbird." *obviously not literally, but metaphorically.
