Rosh Hashanah means the Head of the Year in Hebrew. Its table includes various foods with symbolic meaning.
There are sliced apples and honey for a sweet new year;
Head of the fish (Gefilte fish) for the head of the year (may you be a leader and not a follower);
Round challah bread for the cycle of the year;
Among the fruits which are served on Rosh HaShanah is the pomegranate. Its purpose is to symbolize being fruitful like the pomegranate with its many seeds.

Yes, Shana Tova everyone! I hope 5772 will be a good one for all and a fantastic skating year as well :)

For sure, you can't have a Jewish holiday without traditional food! I can't think of anything beyond what Eden listed, though there may be specific foods among different ethnic groups - for instance, fish dishes served by Mizrahi Jews will likely be rather different than those on an Ashkenazi holiday table. Honey is usually served alongside apples, but plenty of honey cakes and cookies will also be gifted and served during the next few days.

In my Mom's house, in addition it usually means stuffed cabbage, kasha varnishkas, and brisket. She complained yesterday that her kasha varnishkas had developed a life of their own and increased exponentially all of a sudden.

I'm not complaining about that! Yum. :lol:
