I felt like they should have placed higher, but I'm not a technical specialist.

What I enjoy so much with this couple is the unique spin they put on various styles. A tango FD is so standard, but they're really producing something different (such as in the opening sequence) that still feels like an actual tango. I recall their SD last season also included some really original-seeming elements that separated it a bit from the other general waltzes.

It's a little tough to think ahead to Nationals, as I also adore Paul/Islam and want them to succeed...but Canada really has some lovely, fresh up-and-comers right now.

I really liked their take on crossing twizzles=just excellent!

Just watched their FD and I really loved it! I like this team, they look like contenders this year, much improved.

I love these 2 and can't wait to see how their dances grow over the season. I agree that their FD is very difficult!

I watched a Russian feed of the gala at SA tonight...Asher performed shirtless! Although he did put a white t-shirt on for the finale!

He's very intense. I like that about him. They definitely have improved this year.

What did they skate to in the gala?

I felt like they should have placed higher, but I'm not a technical specialist.

I thought so too. I thought their FD was a little better than that of Tobias/Stagniunas but then again I'm not a technical specialist either.

R&H didn't get the levels that Tobias & Stagniunas did.

R&H in the FD had a base value of 35.50, T&S had 38.50.

The teams' PCS was very close, but the TES did them in.

Well they just better up their TES then ;). I think they have improved greatly and seem to be well motivated to up their game.......Good luck to them.

Sorry, but for me Tobias & Stagniunas medal look like a joke. This look like Shpilband force nothing more.
I understand now in ice dance nobody watching did dancers skate with music or no. But R-H FD was most difficult at this competition, and they must have higer marks in CH and Tr.

No, that was the problem. They didn't succeed in getting the higher levels. They got only level 2 on their steps, and a level 2 on their final lift. If they had gotten level 4 on the lift, they would have the medal. And it looks like that lift was designed not to get level 4, for that matter. (It didn't have enough rotations).

But without doubt, Ralph & Hill had the coolest twizzle sequence at Skate America.

Grushina/Goncharov pulled the same trick back at Olympics 2006 as Tobias/Stagniunas did here: Tobias & Stagniunas really worked the code of points, and used the fact that if you go slow on the footwork and use very open holds, you might be able to hit those edges enough for the higher levels. And they picked music that really appealed to the crowd for both their programs (Shakira, Let's Twist Again, Only You, & Tutti Frutti, so that the crowd was really on their side, despite it being an American crowd and not a Lithuanian crowd ;) )

So how judges could give credits for skaters, who use not too much open holds?

10-25-2011, 04:42 PM
Change the rules.

Open holds are not penalized right now and closed holds are only slightly rewarded.

Thanks! Did you talk about positions in step sequenses or in transitions?
Because if you are talking about SS - i think they really need to change the rules.
