Marcia Frederick. Seriously, her World Championship UB performance in 1978 was milestone in USA gymnastics.

Hillary Grivich...

Yes, definitely sad.

I left off a number of worthy candidates in favor of people who have World/American Cup gold medals like Postell, Worley, Hong, Vise, Powell. World AA silver like Bieger or who won NCAAs like Kulikowski.

Some Others:

Injuries/illness/age restrictions prevented them from making a big splash internationally on the senior level:
Tabitha Yim, Dianne Durham, Morgan White, Samatha Sheehan, Katie Heenan, Lindsay Wing, Jennie Thompson, Krystal Uzelac

I always wonder what happened to Jennie Thompson. She was right up there in 1999, and *poof* was gone in 2000.

:wuzrobbed Tabitha Yim... she and Morgan White both had an Olympics ripped right from their hands.

After 1999 Worlds, she had to have more surgeries and couldn't recover in time for the Olympics so she retired.

I agree about Yim. What makes it sadder is that with the way Athens turned out, we could have used a BB and FX worker like her.

Aw so far, no one is sad for Jana Bieger.

Sorry. :P

Jana Bieger makes my eyes bleed, although I respected her determination and making the most of obviously limited talent. I cant believe she nearly won the World AA title once.

The year the hideous Vanessa Ferrari won WITH a fall. That was a hideous Worlds other than the Chinese winning team.

The fact that Ferrari won at all is so gross but that she won with a fall is just nauseating. Seriously, in my mind I refuse to acknowledge that she is a World AA champ.

That was the worst AA podium ever. I couldn't even remember who won bronze (Sandra Izbasa). Had to look it up on Wikipedia.

I forgot that Izbasa even used to compete bars.

I am not a huge Izbasa fan, but I will take her over Ferrari and Bieger.

And here is what she did at the 1980 USGF invitational (alternate event to the boycotted Olympics):

It's so sad to me that this routine never made a World or Olympic floor final:

...Yet Samantha Sheehan and Jana Bieger are world medalists on floor

Gymnastics has died compared to then, that was supposed to be our "bad" period but I'd still prefer to watch most routines from our team that era than now in the era that we are dominating.

I think most people prefer to watch most routines from any team from that era than now.

I am glad she won since she prevented Jana Bieger from becoming World AA Champ. Also apart from that she won ith a fall I dont mind her gymnastics when she was at her best as much as most seem to. She was a decent stop gap while the real gymnasts were out injured or not on the scene yet.

Atler did make the World floor event final in 1999. She qualified in 4th place. She had to pull out due to injury though. Remember she was so injured at those Worlds she could barely complete the AA competition. This is Vanessas best performance to that program:
