The pre season is about to start for hockey! I'm sort of excited to see what this season will bring. The Buffalo Sabres have a new owner who is determined to bring the cup to Buffalo! And I hope he does it! :cheer2:

I wish the Phoenix Coyotes would have a new owner. Otherwise this could be their last season here. I plan to go to at least one of their games before they move. Last few years I went to some of their games. I love this team, and I really hope against hope that they can stay.

My LA Kings are improved this season, and hope to go deep into the Cup playoffs.

Vash, I'm afraid I don't see any hope for the 'yotes to stay in Phoenix past this season. Not sure where they will end up, some Canadian city is likely.

Trolls from Canada have been rampant on their chat board for the last two years. There is a talk of them moving to Quebek next season. The NHL has not yet voted on the two potential owners (one of them is a former CEO of the San Jose Sharks). The City of Glendale is responsible for this fiasco, and a close second it the Goldwater Institute. If not for GWI, Matthew Hulsizer would have bought the team and it would have been good for the team and the city. The most likely scenario is that a sale will not take place, and the team will move next season. Glendale and its tax payers will have to bear the burden. The whole thing has been pathetic. If there is any consolation in this sad story is that they did not move back to Winnipeg. The trolls from that city were the most obnoxious posters I have ever seen on a chatboard.

Anybody watching Shanahan's suspension videos? If he keeps on going at that rhythm there won't be any players left to play the regular season!!

Not that I'm against the process, it is clearer to know why a guy is suspended, but it seems there is an awful lot of infractions for pre-season games!!

Considering Winnipeg had their Team taken away from them in one of the most underhanded and nasty moves the NHL has ever made thanks to the slimeball Bettman is, I'm not surprised *some* of their fans have a chip on their shoulder.

The Phoenix mess, and yes it's been a mess pretty much since Day One thanks to the NHL and their handling of it, was going to end badly regardless. I'm also surprised the team's stayed in Arizona this long. I know there's fans down there and I feel so sorry for them as no one deserves this kind of treatment by those who are supposed to keep something like this from happening, but most Hockey people have known for a very long time it would end up not working in Arizona. It's just not Hockey Territory sadly and in this day and age and ecomony, that's what you need for an NHL Team to thrive.

Why Bettman insists on putting US teams into areas where there's no real history or heritage so the Team has a real chance to survive just drives me nuts. It's a dis service to the Players/Team, to those Fans that do show up and take a real interest in that city's Team and also to the Game itself. Now, a putting a Team into North Dakota where they live, eat and sleep hockey, that would work or at least have a chance of working. That however would make sense, so therefore, not going to happen.

And Vash, I get you're angry and I would be too if I was in your shoes, but coming over here and painting all Canadian/Winnipeg posters over at the other board "Trolls" doesn't exactly make me want to continue to read what you've posted in this thread. Yes, I know online Hockey Fans can be pretty bad. It's the reason why I stopped taking part in any of the Hockey MB's I'd joined back in the day.

However, I'm sure not all of the Canadian Hockey and Winnipeg Jets fans/members over there are acting like the little children this group are acting like. I get you're upset, but you could have worded your post a bit differently *over here*. I don't appreciate it when I see someone painting *every* Canadian member, regardless of what the MB is for/like, at another board w/the same brush over the actions/posts of a bunch of idiots who need to grow up.

And BTW, it's Quebe*c* not "Quebek".

If you read their posts, you would call them 'trolls' too. Every Canadian does not get that label, only those who crowd the chatboards of a team in another city/country with the sole purpose of annoying the fans there. If the Coyotes leave, I will be sad but I am not going to the chatboard of their new home to taunt the fans there!

The reason Winnipeg lost their team was the lack of fan support. Even when they made the playoffs they could not get their fans to attend. It was only after the team left, the 'jets' as they still call them became their darlings.

You want a team in North Dakota? Do you know what is the population of ND?

Phoenix is the 5th major city in the country. Hockey is doing well here, with kids playing hockey and having their leagues. They are growing up watching the Coyotes play, and some day they will want to play in the NHL. As I explained the trolls who claimed that Hockey does not work in the desert, NHL hockey is not played on frozen ponds. It is played indoor, in heated buildings. If San Jose, LA, Dallas can have thriving hockey teams, there is absolutely no reason why it would not work in Phoenix/Glendale. The Coyotes suffered from having a bad owner who filed for bankruptcy, a bad GM, and a horrible coach- the Great One who was not so great at coaching. It's hard for any town support a perrenial losing team. The new management has turned this team around. All they need is an owner, but with the horrible lease signed by Glendale, it's going to be tough.

I would not blame Bettman for moving teams that are not making money. The Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas and the 'Stars' are doing just fine. Bettman wants the big market Phoenix, and not some small town in ND that does not yet have a team. I guess you would rather have a team in a tiny town with freezing temperatures, and watch it fold after the first few years of excitement is over. The Edmonton Oilers are not doing so great either, so what makes you think a ND town is going to do well?

Do you realize that the majority of teams that are making sufficient monies to keep their "poorer" sisters afloat are teams in Canada.

Bettman has been mostly nothing but BAD for the NHL and I wish he would
just.go.awaylike back to his real love -- basketball.

Vash, you're absolutely right about this.
I'm a proud Canadian hockey fan and I'm thrilled there's a team back in Winnipeg, but the fans have to be more supportive than they were the first time around.

I for one think Brendan Shanahan is doing a great job and I hope it continues.

And here we go again, a non suspension for a hit to the head in Saturday's preseason Habs vs Lightning game (by TB's Ryan Malone). Way to go NHL!

Opening Night! Here's hoping for a great season! The NHL has the perfect opportunity, if they play their cards right, of making some in-roads in non-tradional markets with basketball being out. Here's hoping Bettman (and I'm one who is NOT a fan) makes the most of it.

Which is exactly why Phoenix is going to lose their teams. Attendance is brutal there. Worse than anything in Winnipeg. Plus I understand that a lot of the people who do attend those games are actually Canadian snowbirds. :shuffle:

Source, please.

If hockey is doing so well in Phoenix, you'd think the Coyotes would have better attendance.

This has nothing to do with the success of an NHL franchise. People in most part of the southern US do not give a rats a@@ about hockey. The US is a country that loves football, baseball and basketball. Hockey is #4 and probably even lower if you think of college football.

Anyway, Bettman and the NHL's biggest problem was putting that team in Glendale. I was Arizona a few years ago and we were talking to people who lived in Phoenix who said they would never drive the 45 minutes to Glendale for a game. They should have put the rink in downtown PHX.

thank you Rafter, you put into words some of what I was thinking about how similar it is between Winnipeg first losing their team and how Phoenix is likely to lose theirs.

Just one other thing to throw into the pot and stir: back in the day that Winnipeg lost their team, they had attendance problems much like Phoenix. However, at that time there was a major difference in the Canadian and U.S. dollars and Canadian teams had to pay their players in U.S. dollars. So, I'm thinking that ownership back then felt it even more in their pocketbook than just a lack of people attending the game.

I really am sorry for those in Phoenix who have come to love the game of hockey, but Bettman really hasn't done the game a great deal of good. He has tried to foist the game on groups of people whose sports interests don't include sitting in a cold hockey rink. Too bad cause it's a wonderful game (well at least most of the time).

Kings pull out a win in OT against the Rangers in Stockholm. Man, Henrik Lundquist is just a beast in goal, and the Kings were fortunate to beat him.

Today they get Ryan Miller and the Sabres in Berlin. Not getting any kind of a break there....

The plan was to build the arena in Scottsdale, which is a more central location, but the Scottsdale city council voted against it. Glendale seized the opportunity, and built the arena. The reason the Coyotes have not done well is previous ownership and coach. When you put a winning team on the ice, the fans come. It's happened with the Cardinals, the DBacks, and the Suns. There is no reason why it won't happen with the Coyotes, but I do agree that driving to Glendale on a weekday is a problem for many of us who have to go to work the next morning. I liked it when they were playing in downtown Phoenix, which is as central a location as it can get, but the arena (America west, at that time) could not be remodeled for hockey, so they had to build a new arena. With the right owner/planning it could have worked. That's why I was disappointed that HUlsizer had to pull out of the deal. He was committed to not only the hockey, but to developing the area near the arena. Now everything is uncertain.
