Well the cat is out of the bag: I would love to see this young man go to Sochi without pressure---you know---this Olympics is just preparation for bigger things ahead (the next Olympics) and then see him win the Sochi gold because he is under less strain. But he looks so captivating now that I don't know if that is possible.

look at how well he's jumping now. and that's after the quake profoundly affected his training, his home region. granted the competition season hasn't started yet, but i see incredible will and resilience in him. i just think he's one who will thrive in the spotlight.

I've seen Hanyu skate live at Torun JGP and to me it was clear that he was a very rare, special talent.

He skated a very simple program (Nanami Abe's crap choreography) but his speed, his flow, his elegant lines meant it was a very special experience. He did a gigantic 3axel which covered a lot of the rink's width. Made me gasp.

And then I saw him in the audience and he was this tiny, skinny, quiet boy. You'd never guess that after just seeing him on the ice, where he manages to project this special stature, despite being quite introverted and not perky in the slightest.

He urgently needs to get better choreography though because Nanami Abe isn't able to take him to the next level. And he has all the right basics.

He can also do a sequence of triple Axels (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC_HTug5jTM)!

:eek::eek::eek:

I didn't even think this was possible.

Hanyu's will be getting off to an early start this season, as he's entered for Nebelhorn. So we should see how he does (and what jumps he includes in his programs) pretty soon!

Speaking of Johnny talk, is he still planning his Gaga spectacular, or have those plans fizzled?

I seem to remember an interview where he mentioned he wanted to leave gaga behind. Can any one confirm this?

Given Gaga seem soooo yesterday and Bruno Mars is sooo today, I'd highly recommend him taking up being a Martian as his next gig! I happen to think he'd be exceptional at it. Johnny could be the David Bowie of Figure Skating! :D

As for Hanyu... it is wonderful he has obviously taken on the rare combination of characteristics of the sort of skaters he looks up to.

The softness, suppleness, great expressions, emotional sensitivities from Johnny + the gutsy, proud, technically ambitious/brilliant Plushenko with a little bit of his bravado entitlement charisma as well. All makes him a compelling skater to watch out for.

I can only describe recent Hanyu's presence on ice similar to how you'd imagine a prince will perform (sorry is that too cheesy?). The way he move around the ice with complete confidence to totally own the rink, attacking each elements with complete abandonment. Even when he makes mistakes, he shrug them off like it was nothing. Although one can always be polished more, there's a raw energy from him i just found it so refreshing and the bits that are brilliant can only show the greater potentials to come.

Um, first of all, Gaga is sooooooooooooooooooooooo*gasp*oooooooooooooooooooo far from being "yesterday", and second of all, Johnny could never be serious (if he said that)...."leave gaga behind?"

He is a promising skater of 16 years old! I am looking forward to seeing him at Nebelhorn Trophy.:)

The 4t-3x is sick enough but as has been mentioned would not be good under CoP due to the 20% rule on sequences. However this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d4nMeovq-4&feature=player_detailpage#t=30s) just made my jaw drop. LBO as if going into a lutz, counter turn, BAM triple axel  Just OMG. Is this his new SP? Can't wait to see this in competition!

You can really see Johnny's influence in that number (and the Weir-tard costume).

It's hard to believe Hanyu is so young.

Matt Savoie did that same entrance to a 3A in a program several years ago :P

What comp and year? All I can see are amazing entrances from spread eagles, back pivots and back hydroblades - all incredible - but I'm failing to see a counter turn entry. I'd love to see someone else do this :)

flo - I mentioned this in the other thread, but I'm pretty sure Abbott uses or used the entrance fairly regularly, especially the year he first won his U.S. title (so 2008?) or the year right before that, so you could check his programs from around that time. (Of course, I could be completely imagining this  , but I remember thinking when Abbott was struggling with his 3A that he should try an easier entrance.)
