It always surprises me when athletes in different sports know one another. One of the top US cyclists was tweeting back and forth with Jeremy Abbott for some time, and now this tweet from Todd Eldredge:

@J_Horton11 Have a great meet brother! Kick some @ss!

I think we should do predictions after the TF, AA and EF are set. It is too hard to do predictions when you have to factor in who MIGHT be competing in all the events.
I agree. If most of you had thought otherwise, that would have been fine with me, but I feel the same way. :) That will be easier for me as well, otherwise there would have been a lot of names to enter into the database! :yikes:

I hope the contest will be valid for men as well
Yes, I was going to include the men! :)

Wonder if they met through one of the the Disson Skating "Skating and Gymnastics" shows?

That has to be it. Jon has done that show for the last few years and I think Todd has been part of it too. How fun to see him wish Jon good luck for Worlds. :)

honestly between Cheng and Sacramone both gymnastics and personality-wise, I'd pick Cheng every time. IMO, Sacramone's got good form (for the most part) and power but that's about it. Oh, and all that butt thrusting on floor in 2008 and her "artistry" on beam are HIDEOUS.

I never understood the appeal of Sacramone on beam, but since expression, artistry and all that are completely moot on vault, I root for her to medal there. I just wish she'd attempt to stick her landings.

Don't the gymnastics team have their headquarters in Colorado Springs or they used to? Skating in the U.S. is kind of centered there, as well, or at least used to be. I bet these people have run into each other there but also those skating/gymnastics shows surely bring them together.

I believe the USAG is headquartered in Indianapolis, but I may be wrong.

Sandra Iszbasa is out of Worlds. It looks like unless Belu and Bitang pull off their special magic, the podium will consist of USA, Russia, and China.

That's gonna hurt. I wonder how Ponor is doing? I suppose we shouldn't expect too much from her.

I have actually heard that Ponor is looking good, and her twisting form is much improved.

As for Sacramone's appeal mentioned above, she gets very high E scores from international judges and is always credited for all her leaps. She is also very consistent.

It makes more sense when both are Summer or Winter Olympians, but these are not.

They could be from the same area... just a guess. However in some countries (China, Russia etc) they have a centralised sporting systems with big clubs, for instance CSKA Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSKA_Moscow) has teams in many sports, football, ice hockey, gymnastics weightlifting etc. So it is possible to know athletes in different sports since they re training in facilities near by. On top of that there are athletes who are competing in both summer and winter olympics like Clara Hughes.

There is a US Olympic Training center in Colorado Springs, isn't there?

I saw a video of the last time Ponor competed which was at the Rom/GBR friendly meet and trust me, her twisting form was NOT improved. Her triple twist is still the only tucked triple twist I have ever seen and her full in is tucked on the first flip and piked on the second. The only improvement is that her DTY is looking very powerful and the twisting form on it isn't as bad, probably because she has more power and can hold her form.

Her beam is rock solid, she should be contending for the title again. Maybe not this year, not sure what her D score is, but by the Olympics she will be right in it. She simply doesn't wobble.
