Cheng Fei had a .9 combined D score advantage over Sacramone on vault in 2008 so could afford to fall and still beat her (a fall was .8 then and keep in mind the vaults were averaged).
The rules were changed in 2009 to (IMHO) prevent this from happening, as there is a new deduction of underrotating a salto on vault of .1 if there is no fall and .3 if there is a fall. So a fall like Cheng took by landing short would be 1.3 in deductions now.
While I'd have prefered to not see someone fall and still medal, IMHO it's quite reasonable that the judges correctly applying the rules still lead to this outcome.

Cheng almost missed her hands on the horse on her Cheng. The score should have had other major deductions apart from the fall.

I agree. The fall was .8 but there were many other major errors. She didn't do a really good vault that she just sat down for some odd reason, much like when a skater lands a perfect jump but slips off the edge. Those are fluke mistakes. In her case, the vault had many errors that should have been deducted and they all foretold the fall.

Speaking of predictions, how about a gymnastics prediction contest, on the site we're using for the figure skating competitions? I could create one.

Sounds good to me.

Alicia Sacramone to be one of the athletes featured in the ESPN The Magazine's "Body Issue". AA potential scores:

It looks like Jordyn's to lose with Maroney and Raisman duking it out for USA's second AA spot with both having a good chance of medaling.

I LOVE Chellsie, but my shoulder hurts just thinking of her. :yikes: (We're the same age.)

Okay, then I'll create a prediction contest. Should I enter all the gymnasts and all the predictions should be made before the competition start, or wait after the preliminaries to see who makes the team finals, the AA and the EF? I am in favor of the latter, but I'm still unsure.

I think we should do predictions after the TF, AA and EF are set. It is too hard to do predictions when you have to factor in who MIGHT be competing in all the events.

I agree. That seems to make the most sense.

I hope the contest will be valid for men as well

Re Sacramone vs Cheng, I for one am glad that Cheng medalled over Sacramone in the VT EF at Beijing. It isn't ideal that Cheng medalled with a fall, but Sacramone knew the risks of going for lower difficulty well before 2008 and she either couldn't or wouldn't upgrade and thus paid the price. Cheng medalled because the rules favoured going for higher difficulty at that time (not to mention that her first vault was very good), and honestly between Cheng and Sacramone both gymnastics and personality-wise, I'd pick Cheng every time. IMO, Sacramone's got good form (for the most part) and power but that's about it. Oh, and all that butt thrusting on floor in 2008 and her "artistry" on beam are HIDEOUS.

Maroney's got excellent form on vault and I wouldn't mind if she wins in London, but if both hit I'd prefer that Cheng win for sentimental reasons. Everything that I've seen and read about Cheng makes me want to root for her.

Paseka is out of Worlds for Russia. I don't think it was clear if she was an alternate or not but she vaulted a good Amanar at a recent competition and it was pretty much a given she would be on the team for vault alone. Now she is out with a hamstring injury and Russia's problems just got a lot worse.

Looks like I can say who would win Teams prelim
Teams final ... mmm depends on the psychology
