Gabby hit bars night 2 of Nationals and now hit bars again (it appears). I'd say take her to Worlds. Bars is her best event and she's more useful than Li on the other events if need be.

Gabby is a fighter and I tend to think Nationals was a fluke. She came back pretty well on night 2 after a disastrous day one, and that says something about her competitive spirit, IMO.

^By this, and a few other posts, it seems you really don't like Gabby?
Which is ridiculous, since she's clearly very talented, dedicated and what? 15 years old! You make it sound like she has failed at every championships she has ever been to.....but err.....has she even represented her country at a senior event?

She may not have learned the art of executing her VERY DIFFICULT routines consistently, but she's clearly improving. Perhaps a little appreciation of her talent wouldn't go a miss ;)

:cheer: I love Gabby and hope she makes the team. I find it obnoxious when people pretend like certain athletes are liabilities when in truth they're just as solid as most others but have never been given much opportunity/experience. Reminds me of those who said after Nationals that the decision to send Dornbush and Miner to Worlds was a tragedy. To that, I say, feck off! :blah:

And if she does make the team and make mistakes, at least she was given a chance and perhaps it will help her in the future also...

I really dont TRUST Gabby. I think if we take her to Worlds we will lose the gold because of a complete meltdown by her. She hit bars at Nationals Day 2 and it seems that was luck based on what else I have seen. I don't count hitting at camp (otherwise known as in training) because it is nothing like hitting in an arena, on a podium, with a crowd.

If we do take her then I hope she only touches bars in TF.

But please, don't act like this is anything personal.

Really, we would only take Gabby for bars in TF anyway, though. Her DTY isn't needed on vault, the U.S. is stacked on beam and also covered on floor with Sacramone, Raisman, Wieber, Maroney, etc.

I say take her over Anna Li because a) she's available as a back up on every other event if need be, and b) at 14 years old, she is the future. Sacramone, Memmel, Li, Caquatto, etc won't be around forever, so it's important to give younger gymnasts opportunities to gain experience at major international events.

If Anna had hit bars every time, I'd say take her, but she's hit cleanly once and left out a connection that time.

I like Gabby, but we could be looking at a Mattie Larson situation in team finals again if she were to implode.

I really wanted the World to see Anna Li's bars, but how much of a specialist can she be if she can't hit? I agree that we should take Douglas if she indeed hit her Bars set at camp (and she ended up with a higher overall bars score than Li at Nationals). We can't count on potential scores if the gymnast can't be counted on.

Exactly. Anna hasn't been consistent through Cover Girl and Nats either and now she's flubbed the verification routine too. Not so much a fluke at this point it seems. :(

I do agree Gabby could unfortunately melt down (and I really like her routine so would be :fragile:) but if we're going to take a bars specialist, I'd be inclined to give her the experience too - so long as Marta's willing to write if off as such.

But see she'd only do bars in TF, and thats the event she hasnt tanked yet. A routine with a fall from Gabby would still outscore a hit routine from Raisman, Maroney, Shawn, and probably even Memmel at this point (I dont see her showing up at 2nd camp with a full set that can outscore a hit UB from Gabby, AND staying healthy through TF with that routine.) As much as I trust Memmel to hit, I trust her health much less than I trust Gabby's ability to hit a bar routine in TF.

We have one bar worker. One. And I'm not convinced yet the intl judges will even let her break a 15 on this event because there are potential built-in deductions galore. We need Gabby, and we probably need Memmel too but I say we have no choice right now but to take chances. I think Anna Li still even has a shot with only hitting 1 out of 4 because a fall from her would still score better than most of the team.

We've never had such a potentially bad UB rotation at any big competition, ever IMO. When you consider 7 years ago in 2004 we had potentially 10 routines that could've been great scores in TF for any team (Kupets, Terin, Carly, McCool, Mohini, Tasha Schwikert, Memmel, Vise, Ishino, Tricase, age-falsified Nastia, even out-of-retirement Krystal Uzelac or Nicole Harris), now we barely have one. :o

Wasn't the UB situation before Beijing pretty dire as well? Of course, it may not be this bad, but you'd think Marta and USAG would learn something.

No, definitely not. Between Liukin, Johnson (not the best lines but Ray dismount and high difficulty) and Memmel, I think bars was fairly well covered in Beijing. Peszak and Sloan also had decent bar sets.

As I recall it, the us was giving up 1.3 in sv to China on ub. Sloan may have had a higher sv than Shawn, but was unreliable on the event. Sam P couldn't outscore Shawn. Dire might be too strong, but it wasn't far off.

I know - in 2004, we left a healthy world event champion on UB off the team, left another one home due to injury, and still had another one on the team. Vault was the worry then.

Yes, I remember the days when the US was scrambling to find a few DTYs for vault and we were leaving UB World Champs at home. Be careful what you wish for? lol
