^^Rachael has been struggling to find a style that works for her for a long time. I was wary of her East of Eden program just because of the music's significance when it comes to Michelle Kwan. I took my Kwan glasses off and watched the program and I thought it was decent...until all of the arm flailing, bee swatting, having a spastic fit or whatever you want to call it footwork. It doesn't match the music and she looked insane doing it. Some people may call it passion but I call a big ol' mess, despite the tech caller giving it a level 4 (travesty IMO). And that costume should be donated to Alaska; they could launch it into the sky and it could light the northern parts of the state during their dark months. It was offensively yellow; paired with her pale skin and flat colored blond hair, it was sartorial catastrophe. I hope she burned that dress.

Hopefully, moving to California and entering college will have some influence on her style. Rachel is dowdy and frumpy looking which is awful in a sport where appearance counts for quite a bit. She needs a style overhaul; I'm talking full style overhaul: clothing, hair, makeup, music, choreography...the whole nine.

Little harsh, eh? And actually Rachael looks very cute/pretty in so many pictures taken off the ice when she's wearing normal, flattering clothes. It's so weird, like off the ice she always looks put together, fit & trim, cute, and even pretty, but like on the ice it's a different story and she seems to have a habit of picking costumes in unflattering cuts and colors.

Well, with a new team Flatt we shall see if there is significant improvement on that front.

She said on twitter the judges at champs camp were looking over her costume sketches, so I'm hopeful she only wore the neon dress as a placeholder. :) In the pictures from champs camp she looks good. The haircut is short enough to look Mia Farrow-y rather than soccer mom-ish. It's about the same length as it was at last season's NHK, so not bad.

About the flaily footwork: I don't really like it in the context of the program, but if you watch it compared to other step sequences you can understand why it got a level 4: there's just so much going on.

I'm also a MK fan, but I liked Rachael's EOE. I blame the bee swatting footwork on COP. I didn't care for Keegan Messing's FS footwork at Skate Detroit because it has so many stops up on the toe picks...but he got a good level for that and it will probably stay. Many people had a problem with Evan Lysacek's footwork because of all the flailing, but that is also what COP wants. Listening to David Kirby (tech specialist) talk about footwork (in the Arena at Nationals) I realized that COP wants to see the entire body engaged - lots of bowing, gesturing, stop and starts for the skater to get high levels...

Anyway, I do hope Rachael finds her own style with both her costumes and music selections. I wish her the best for this coming season.

Interesting observations... Entire body engagement works for me when it involves dynamic (not frenzied) energy, and graceful moves that interpret the music well, not over-the-top, skating-over-the-music flailings thrown in simply to grab points. It seems some judges miss these distinctions.

A great example of graceful, full-body engagement that adheres to CoP points gathering, but also interprets the music with beautifully performed choreo:

Burned the dress? Nope, she wore it again.

well, it was the judges who told Rachael to cut and color her hair.

Seeing the pics from the camp made me excited for the season to begin. The Shibutani's
certainly are an attractive couple. That picture of Alissa (in costume) is the first unflattering photo I have ever seen of her. I guess it was the lighting. Re Frank, I guess at an event like this he doesn't have on his competition make-up. lol Looking old does sometimes happen "overnight"
though. David Santee needs to lose some weight for his health.

I wish Carolyn would stop posing with the head-tilted-down-eyes-up pose. She does this in every picture.

Were any of Rachael's coaches with her at the camp? Did anyone observe any interaction between her and Tom?

well, it was the judges who told Rachael to cut and color her hair.

This is what I hate about our sport. Judges should be telling skaters to fix things about their SKATING, not about their hair. This is why people make fun of figure skating. When judges give comments about hair it makes it seem like looks and sparkles count as much as the athletics.

Keauna McLaughlin did this all the time, too. Someone told them that every picture looks better if you keep your chin down and look up. I don't think this is true.

That is an old posing trick for when shooting photos to make your face look thinner

Um, are we sure it doesn't? :shuffle:

I don't think it counts as much as athletics, but there is a standard for how one should look while competing.
