Have financial aid rules changed? Just curious as back when I was in college, if you received federal or institution based aid, you had to take a full load to keep it. (I know that would likely not be an issue for Rachael).

I work in financial aid, and students can receive federal aid such as PELL grant at a pro-rated amount if they are not full time. (Although I am sure, given Rachael's parents careers, they are not grant eligible. ;)) For federal student loans, a student must be enrolled at least half-time.

As for institutional aid, obviously that is set up by each school. The four year public school I work at mandates full time attendance as well as earning full time credit (i.e. not withdrawing from classes and falling below full time) + maintaining a certain GPA for continuation of our institutional scholarships.

I just hope the new coaches make her stop using her arms in a windmill fashion. It's rather annoying.

Not everyone feels that way...

Well that's why it's called an opinion, silly. :P

But what's your favorite of hers?

Everyone said the same about East of Eden and it was arguably her best sp to date.

It was tragic. Everything about it was hopelessly tragic. From the ridiculous flailing, which had nothing to do with the music, down to the Sesame Street big bird costume.

Well, at least you were moved by it. :P

Her Romantic Rhapsody (junior version) was her best ever, IMO. When she won the world junior title, I had really high hopes for her. Since that time, her posture has gotten worse (and was still an issue then) as have her leg lines, and her sense of musicality has vanished. She attacks skating like she attacks a math book, and in an effort to add points by practicing harder jump combos and changing entrances, her in-between skating has become atrocious IMO. I'd be thrilled if this new team can renew some of those lost abilities.

I think she needs to become an adult, instead of the perfect child. Skating like the perfect child only looks good on a skater when they are juniors. As they get older, it just doesn't work.

Just a minor point of disagreement: Rachael doesn't have a full arsenal of triples since she does not have a triple axel.

She also has weird technique on her lutz imo.

Anyway, I especially like Ponomarenko on her team. I wish Rachael the best of luck at school and if she still wants to skate more power to her.

What Axel Annie said.

Firebird is very nuanced and requires a lot of attack. I can't imagine Flat doing it justice, it'll probably be very painful to watch.

I agree but who knows? She may yet prove the doubters wrong. Stranger things have happened. :D

Everyone said the same about East of Eden and it was arguably her best sp to date. People underestimate Rachael and I think part of the problem is that she has been wrongly packaged from Day 1. I can't wait to see what she looks like without Tom Z helping to package her. Already I'm impressed with the more aggressive music choice. JMO

:cheer2:

^ That's true. EoE is her best program to date. Hands down. I reserve judgment until after I see a program.

I don't...the Ina Bauer moment was nice but that's all I can say about that. :shuffle:

I hope so, too.

Romantic Rhapsody was really great too, actually. Probably my favorite free program of hers. Honestly, I feel like everyone that moves away from Tom Z is packaged better. Look at Josh Farris - he was very elegant and smooth at Glacier Falls. I really think (and hope) that we see some dramatic changes within Rachael's skating this year.

I am SO glad that she changed her SP last year. Originally, both programs were truly dreadful. The "cutesy" stuff that she was given did NOT (!!!!!) work for her. EoE was light years better than Summertime, but SOTA was still awful at the end. I mean, it grew on me a little bit, but I didn't care for the choreography at all. Rachael is so much better than that!

^^Rachael has been struggling to find a style that works for her for a long time. I was wary of her East of Eden program just because of the music's significance when it comes to Michelle Kwan. I took my Kwan glasses off and watched the program and I thought it was decent...until all of the arm flailing, bee swatting, having a spastic fit or whatever you want to call it footwork. It doesn't match the music and she looked insane doing it. Some people may call it passion but I call a big ol' mess, despite the tech caller giving it a level 4 (travesty IMO). And that costume should be donated to Alaska; they could launch it into the sky and it could light the northern parts of the state during their dark months. It was offensively yellow; paired with her pale skin and flat colored blond hair, it was sartorial catastrophe. I hope she burned that dress.

Hopefully, moving to California and entering college will have some influence on her style. Rachel is dowdy and frumpy looking which is awful in a sport where appearance counts for quite a bit. She needs a style overhaul; I'm talking full style overhaul: clothing, hair, makeup, music, choreography...the whole nine.

I'm also a MK fan, but I liked Rachael's EOE. I blame the bee swatting footwork on COP. I didn't care for Keegan Messing's FS footwork at Skate Detroit because it has so many stops up on the toe picks...but he got a good level for that and it will probably stay. Many people had a problem with Evan Lysacek's footwork because of all the flailing, but that is also what COP wants. Listening to David Kirby (tech specialist) talk about footwork (in the Arena at Nationals) I realized that COP wants to see the entire body engaged - lots of bowing, gesturing, stop and starts for the skater to get high levels.

I thought Rachael's yellow dress at Nationals was ok. In the arena it was yellow with a slight green tint. I was totally amazed when I saw youtube videos and stuff I recorded on dvr that the dress looked like "stoplight" yellow :blah:. There have been many times over the years when I've thought "What were they thinking" with the costume color. Why wear a white skating dress for competition. It doesn't stand out or look good against the white ice. White dresses look good in a show setting with spotlights. The year that Michelle Kwan did "The World is Not Enough" at COI in a black sparkly unitard, I kept thinking where is she...because she disappeared under the spotlights!

Anyway, I do hope Rachael finds her own style with both her costumes and music selections. I wish her the best for this coming season.
