I think it's more like they collect the first payment on a million dollar annuity paid over 20 years.

I think at the end of the credits it actually says 40 years. That's barely enough to live on.

 It's $50,000 a year!!

NBC is so cheap, they probably put out a hit on the winner so they don't have to finish paying on the annuity.

I was glad to see the Kinetic King do well, but he makes it to the top 24 instead of J Chris Newberg?? Like there's a chance in hell that the Kinetic King could turn his act into a 90 minute show? And isn't the winner supposed to do five shows a week? Even if he worked 24 hours a day, it wouldn't be enough time for him to set everything up to do that many shows... (And J Chris Newberg was hilarious!)

Is J Chris Newberg the comedian who roasted Piers Morgan? If so, his material was funny this time (saw it on Yahoo News) but I didn't think his delivery was very good, & last time he wasn't funny or professional IMO. I agree with you that Kinetic King couldn't sustain a 90 min show but I think he is better at what he does than JCN is at what he does, and obviously more likeable.

IIRC the winner is only supposed to do X number of shows a week IF they get signed by a Las Vegas Casino, like Terry Fador did.

ETA: I just heard "Fallin" from Michael Grimm's new album...I love it.

Not if it's 40 years. Then it's only 25k.

There is a manditory tour they have to do and they get paid very little for that. I remember complaints about it by a few of the finalists last year

 They win, collect a million dollars and then do a show on Tuesday and then they're done? I thought they had to do a year of shows!

Nope. Some of them got extra $$ last year with the tour, but Prince Poppycock said it was just barely scale. Singers get lucky if they get a recording contract (not included in the deal). Others just hope the exposure gets them work which is what happened with Fador. Most just go back to what they were doing. I think last year was the first year they did a tour and I haven't heard them mention it this year. If it didn't make money, I suspect they won't bother.

That's not much at all, for a whole year.

And, there's all the taxes that will be withheld which makes it a whole lot less.

According to this article (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/americas_got_talent_2/2007_Aug_03_prize ), you can take the lump sum -- around $375,000 (depending on what interest rate they use to figure out the present value of the $1 million stream of payments over 40 years).

Minus taxes, of course.

I would take the lump sum and put it away in the bank.
