Someone mentioned that if after two years team members can't get release from their federation(s), they could appeal to the ISU. Is there a provision for this?
If true, that could blow out the couple from any reasonable chance at the Sochi Olympics, short of being the ice dancer version of Volosozhar/Trankov, but it might set them up for 2018.

You know what? Screw this.
These two need to get back together and make it work.
If Platov dealt with Grishuk all those years, these two can overcome whatever issues they have. They have too much to offer, and we need more than Level 4 Bots in ice dance right now. :soapbox:

I'm thinking of when our parent company was going to sell the subsidiary where I worked back in 2003. (work with me here, folks) They spent months looking at various suitors, got consultants in to evaluate the bids, there were all sorts of rumours about this company or that company buying us, but then after all that our parent company announced they would keep us after all. Maybe after some time apart and reflection Paul and Vanessa will decide getting back together is the best plan.

Why would USFS be more willing to release Emily Samuelson than Caitlin Yankowskas?
Emily and Evan Bates won the 2008 World Junior Championship; silver in both the 2007 and 2008 JGPFs; gold at 2008 Nebelhorn; bronze at 2008 NHK; and silver at 2009 4CC.
Caitlin and John won just two international medals: gold at 2009 Ice Challenge, and bronze at 2010 Cup of China.
I was thinking about the relative strength of the dance and pairs programs in the US, not direct result comparison. Caitlin and John had the best finish of a US pair at Worlds since Inoue & Baldwin finished 4th in 2006. Emily and Evan were the 3rd ranked team in the country before his injury -and even that not decisively. It's a lot easier to let a skater go when you don't feel they're the best partner the country's produced for the past 5 years or so. They could of course decide not to release Emily like they did with Julia Vlassov, but I still think she'd have a much easier time getting released than Caitlin.

I love the way people think that dance and pairs are interchangeable! ...etc.
Urm - I was joking actually - mostly because people seem to be so devastated that these 2 particular skaters are partnerless. I am very aware that the disciplines are extremely different with different demands.
Besides - I would be very very very sad not to see Paul dance again.

I sure hope that Paul and Vanessa don't get back together for an uncertain future in the sport and what might only be a few measly medals if they're so unhappy with each other that they felt the need to split up after their most successful season yet.

New article about Vanessa: Ice dancer Crone seeks new partner (http://www.yorkregion.com/sports/article/1033846--ice-dancer-crone-seeks-new-partner)
“It was personal, more than a skating problem,” Crone said. “It was hard to fix, but we have to grow as people. Everyone was shocked, even when we sat down and knew this was the best for both of us.”
“It’s sad to see everything stop at this point, but it wasn’t healthy what was going on between us. We’re still friends and passionate about skating. Maybe, one day, Paul and I will get back together.”

It makes me wonder exactly what the personal problems were.. as far as I know they weren't romantically involved but what do I really know?

Interesting. Splitting (then reteaming with someone else) made no sense from a competitive perspective, so there really had to be a personal element in all of this somewhere.
Although many might say "why would teams split after 10 years", possibly part of the answer is that when teams get together at such a young age (a fairly new phenomenon), ten years later they are reaching adulthood and may find themselves with different goals and different beliefs about how to reach those goals. Also it's one thing to work together as kids (doing whatever your coaches say) and another thing to forge an adult team together.
Vanessa hints that perhaps with time they can work it out. Maybe so (especially since they've both said they want to continue skating).

Yes, certainly curious. Romantic involvement on the part of one and not the other immediately comes to mind.

So they were about 10 and 9 when they started skating together?
When I first read this I was baffled - but if I back up and try to relate it makes sense.
I know it is a very different circumstance - but there are many people I spent time with at 9 and 10 that I coudn't imagine spending such intense time with for that long. I can see that it may just be the old "irreconcilable differences"

Yeah, I seriously doubt there was any romantic issues there... at least mutually. :shuffle:
I hate interviews like this where people don't say a lot but give out *just* enough to invite rampant speculation.
Like this:
“It will be difficult getting used to another person and how they skate, how they deal with tension and all that.

So will this be followed by an interview with Paul where he drops his own hints?
:( :P
