Just got back from seeing "First Position"; many thanks to emason for the heads-up. It was a delight, but much too short. ;) Has anyone seen it yet?
The audience cracked up laughing every time Miko Fogarty's mother opened her mouth, or anytime her brother Jake appeared on screen. I loved Jose Sebastien Zamora, quite a few people in the theatre applauded when he was awarded the scholarship to the RB school. Nice to see him being coached by Flavio Salazar - I wondered what he'd been up to since he left ABT.
Michaela DePrince touched me the most, what a beautiful young woman. I actually got to see her dance last week; she participated in the ABT program at the Guggenheim.
I must buy this when it comes out on DVD.

I did, and I thought it was fantastic. It's in the vein of documentaries like Spellbound and Mad Hot Ballroom.

The director was a serious ballet student at the Boston Ballet School through high school, but gave it up when she played college hockey.

I own "Only When I Dance" which is in the same vein and also very enjoyable.
(BTW, how the hell did Kevin let Irlan slip through his fingers and join Boston Ballet? Grr.)

McKenzie isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

It's on my list; I'm sneaking off, hopefully tomorrow, with a friend to see it.

Yes, Kevin isn't the brightest bulb and I still think it is the height of arrogance to give yourself a 20th anniversary celebration evening while you are still running the company.

As long as I'm dissing NYC ballet company directors, I just came across this from a review (http://www.kansascity.com/2012/05/05/3594754/seasons-final-kansas-city-ballet.html) of Kansas City Ballet's current mixed bill:

Although it seemed the evening would serve up works by master choreographers, it instead offered sublime ballets by only two genuine choreographic masters -- George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Rounding out the program was a fun piece by the company’s former artistic director, Todd Bolender, and a work by the famously mediocre, unimaginative dance-maker Peter Martins. (He had a distinguished career as a dancer with the New York City Ballet and now is its ballet master-in-chief, but for most New York critics, having to watch a Martins ballet is a dreaded event.)

Saw First Position today and Marge called it - too short. I loved it and I wanted more.

I'm hoping the DVD will have extra footage.

Is anyone going to see ABT's "Giselle" on the 19th? I'm going to the 8PM performance with Vishneva, Gomes, and Semionova.
If anyone wants to meet for dinner or drinks beforehand, say the word. And let me know if I should bring cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery. :)

Unrelated to NYC but is anyone planning to watch the show "Bunheads"?
