It's too bad that Skittl1321 posted after I'd written most of this post, because I could have just agreed with him/her and saved y'all from reading the rest of this novel. :slinkaway

Your post was WAY more informative than mine. Thanks for it.

(The whole pairs process is crazy. When a local skater split with his partner, and effectively retired, not listed on IPS, his coach was saying that he would get calls at midnight begging for try-outs.)

Would you say he's 6-1?

Yeah - I'd say so.

Rockne is like 5'7 btw to you people who call him 5'9 lol

If Josh is actually 6'1" Ashley must be like 5'7" or something because honestly they look so close in height on the ice. And in pictures she looks a little taller than McKinzie Daniels (5'6") and about the same height as Natalia Popova (169 cm = 5'6.5"). Looking at her on the ice she certainly doesn't look only 5'5", which is the height of Alissa and Yuna, but I thought it was maybe possible because she's so thin (Christina Gao is actually only 5'4" or 5'5" but looks taller because of her thinness and long legs). If Ashley is actually around 5'7" she might as well give up pairs, it's going to be incredibly hard to find a partner suitable for her height and if she manages to, chances are he won't be up to her calliber. She's better off sticking with singles IMO, as her height is not unheard of among singles skaters, Carolina Kostner, Agnes Zawadzki, Kiira Korpi, etc. have all done well at a similar height.

I was told by a father of a male skater who quit skating that they received phone calls at all hours of the day by parents of female skaters saying that they would pay all expenses if he would only skate with their daughter, continued for at least a year. This kid was not at a high level of skating - I believe had only passed novice skills, but was 6'".

Yes, the lack of quality boys, specifically tall/strong enough for pairs, has always been a problem in the US, and isn't going away anytime soon, it seems. Having the aptitude as well as the right attitude for pairs is also crucial.

ETA: Also, I think there's a much steeper learning curve for male pair skaters who are transitioning from singles than for females.

Yeah, I think a skater building more upper body muscle to throw and lift, yet still be able to perform triples would be tough to do.

We really will never be Russia in pairs-will we?

Probably not, but I would have said the same thing about ice dancing a decade ago.

I have heard that Junior pairs 7th place finishers Anna Pearce & Craig Norris have split. Although they did well at nationals, they appeared to have reached the top of their potential.

I believe Anna landed two throw triples (including possibly the best loop of the group in the short?),a side by side double axel, and displayed lots of charisma. Definitely some talent there.

Tim LeDuc posted a highlight video of his skating on youtube today. He told me I could share the link (well, plus it is public). He's not listed on IPS, but is definitely seeking a partner.

His hydroblade (49 seconds) is insane.

I hope he finds a partner, I think he is a good pair skater and could be great with the right partner.

I also hopes he gets a tryout with Caitlin :shuffle:

Timothy LeDuc, who will turn 22 in May, competed at US Nationals in singles at the Novice level (placed 7th in 2008) before he started pairs 3 years ago - here's his USFS pairs bio with his former partner (it mentions that he started skating at the age of 12): http://web.icenetwork.com/skaters/detail.jsp?id=39660&mode=P

Are those jumps recent? Those are some mighty fine 3Lz-3Ts. He could definitely have a singles career if pairs does not work out.
