How am I supposed to pronounce "Poirier" of Paul Poirier? It looks like a French name, but it does not sound like the one when I hear Canadian commentators say his name.

Thank you. So it IS really French. To my untrained ears, all I could hear was "Pourié" without the intermediate "a". So I got confused and was not sure.

It's definitely a french name, since "Poirier" is the french translation of "Pear Tree". ;)
And it's more Poa-rié" than "Poua-rié".

I know how to pronounce it since french is my fist language but it's difficult to write the pronounciation. so here what i found.
Poirier
Pwa-re-eh
Origin is French. The french word poirier is a pear tree.
The "oi" in french makes the sound "wa".
The "er" at the end of a word in french makes the sound "eh".
An English person should still pronounce Poirier like Pwa-re-eh

It is actually really hard to write the pronounciation! Especially the ''eh'' at the end. Many English speakers think it's pronounced Pwa-re-ay, but there is a slight difference.

:P:hat1::swoon: Amen! I've been wondering for a long time if bountiful rears like his are born or made. (I'm sure they can be both) ;)

In my parents Canuck household, it would be pronounced Pwa-rey with the accent on the 2nd syllable. French Canadians skip a lot of syllables (at least the ones who came through West Manchester/Pinardville, NH did)

Apparently the commentators on Universal Sports think his last name is Perrier :wall:
