Old Figure Skating Movie Question...Champions: A Love Story

This is a completely random question, but I was watching skating videos on youtube to cure my pre-worlds boredom and I came across a clip of a skating movie from 1979 called Champions: A Love Story.

An online synopsis said that the movie was based on a real life skating tragedy from the 1970's...I was wondering if anyone else had heard the story. Which skaters are they talking about?
