Wondering whether any of the skaters might have trouble with traveling/practicing on Easter and Orthodox Easter? Don't know how huge a deal Easter is in the rest of the world; its significance varies a lot in the US.

Wasn't Worlds in Göteborg 2008 done over easter?

Wondering whether any of the skaters might have trouble with traveling/practicing on Easter and Orthodox Easter?....

Easter is THE A#1 religious holiday for Orthodoxy. Luckily for Russian Orthodox fans in Moscow, the 'action' doesn't kick-off until Monday/Tuesday (prelims) and Wednesday for the main competition.

No disrespect intended...but I suspect that most Russian skaters and officials are 'casual' about their religion, as are almost all of my friends in Russia. For example, if Russian skaters and coaches followed the letter of Orthodoxy, they would be abstaining from practically all types of food (meat, fish and dairy - only shrimp/crab OK) and other "vices" (sex included) for 43 days preceding Easter...meaning abstaining during every Worlds ever held in years past, as Worlds almost always falls during Lent.

During old times (Czarist Era), no ballet or other entertainments were scheduled during lent because the performers had no energy.

But Modern Russia is quite different...even if we see Putin at the Cathedral celebrating Orthodox services. Modern Russia is the Land of Vodka, Caviar & 'Fun' year 'round. :)

Copying this information from a 'Going to Worlds' thread in the Worlds forum. I feel that it's only fair to spread this important information, which I researched, to all FSUers who are interested in going to Worlds:

Public Transport closest to the arena: Metro - DYNAMO, north of city, on Leningradsky Pr. (The Khodynka Arena/Megasport is a few blocks to the west of the Metro!)

Nearby Hotels: Alas, the closest & biggest one, the AEROSTAR (next to the Metro stop) was already fully booked this morn - presumably for skaters and officials. However, also in the vicinity are the Bega and the 'Art Hotel,' which still had rooms this morn. I'm staying with friends (if my 'tourist visa trick' works!) but I would have gone to one of these, if not.

Event Tickets: I haven't seen an online address for ordering tix yet. Soon? It's a big arena, so I'm not too worried...but air and hotel need to be arranged ASAP.
TICKET INFO UPDATE: Here is a link to the Megasport Arena's website (Russian only, sorry) 'upcoming events' page, including phone numbers, etc. http://www.hockey-palace.ru/board/ As you can see, Worlds is still not up on their schedule, the last event in April ('Federal Cup' tennis tournament) ending April 17, then nothing on the calendar until a concert in early June. But I'd keep this link handy, in case tickets go on sale through this before an 'official' English-language site goes online.

It s not a secret that plusenko caused the quake, that caused the tsunami, that caused the nuclear disruption, that caused the worlds cancellation, that caused Russian F to bid for worlds so as to reinstate him.
he also caused the Libya situation to deviate the focus of world community somewere else while all the above are happening.

Perhaps that is not the final word on the Aerostar hotel. They may have fully booked it until they find out just how many rooms they need and perhaps will free up some rooms later. It might pay to keep checking in the coming few days.

I doubt NBC will televise it but you never know. Probably if the US gets any coverage at all it will be on Universal Sports.

Can you imagine the fluff potential though? Wonder if that alone would tempt them...but I guess their schedule's already taken.

This is the ISU official announcement

http://www.isu.org/vsite/vcontent/content/transnews/0,10869,4844-128590-19728-18885-312988-3787-4771-layout160-129898-news-item,00.html

"The ISU has reviewed all applications received and after careful evaluation the ISU Council decided to allot the Championships to the Figure Skating Federation of Russia, to be held in the Megasport Arena in Moscow/Russia, on April 24-May 1, 2011."

Great news for the skaters and fans too!

It would have been easier for me to go to Colorado Springs than Moscow (and there is no way I can go to Moscow at this time), but it's great that world championships are taking place, and the skaters don't have to wait till Oct. for it. Thanks to all the countries and cities that bid on this. It was very gracious. Thanks to the ISU for making the decision, and finally-

YAY!!!! for Moscow!

As posted earlier, it is likely that the only TV coverage in the USA of Worlds will be on Universal Sports TV.

As of now, NBC has NHL playoffs, the National Heads-Up Poker Championships, and the Rolex Equestrian Championships scheduled (http://www.nbcumv.com/mediavillage/sports/nbcsports/pressreleases?pr=contents/press-releases/2011/03/22/sportseventsonn1300826281340.xml) the weekend of April 30-May 1.

Detroit Free Press: Czisny's coach [Dungjen] has conflict with new dates for World Figure Skating Championships (http://www.freep.com/article/20110324/SPORTS17/110324027/Czisny-s-coach-has-conflict-new-dates-World-Figure-Skating-Championships)

Dungjen, who coaches U.S. ladies champion Alissa Czisny with his wife, Yuka Sato, has been the primary coach at the boards for Czisny in all but one of her competitions this season. The dilemma? The new dates of the championships conflict with an International Skating Union pairs training seminar Dungjen is leading in Berlin.

Dungjen is the ISU international technical specialist for pairs.

"First of all, it's just a relief -- for everybody -- that the best-case scenario happened," Dungjen said, referring to Moscow being selected to replace Tokyo, where worlds were scheduled to take place this week. The event was postponed in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. "We're just really relieved for Alissa. She took a huge risk this year, and this is something that she's worked so hard for."

Dungjen said he plans to meet with Czisny today. He hasn't ruled out the possibility of flying from Berlin to Moscow to join Sato and Czisny on the competition dates.
The dates for the ISU Pair Skating Development Training Seminar for Coaches and Pair Skaters in Berlin, Germany are April 23 - May 1, 2011 (for more info, see ISU Communication No. 1661).
ETA:

The Moderators of the seminar are, Mr. Louis Stong (CAN) Coordinator, Mr. Jason Dungjen (USA) Pair coach, Mrs. Dorota and Mr. Mariusz Siudek (POL) Pair coaches, Mrs. Andrea Dohany (SWE) individual coach, Mr. Igor Tchiniaev (CAN) Skating Skills and Mr. Alexander KÖNIG (GER) allround coach.

You would think - since it is an ISU event the date would be changed? Also Siudeks will need to be with Kemp and King at Worlds won't they?
