but I think Tessa has the prerogative to take this in a "day-to-day" and "year-to-year" basis.

I agree with what you said. Considering everything they went through the last Olympic cycle in preparation for the Olympics I don't think they want to jump ahead of themselves and commit.

I think they've been cautiously optimistic in terms of deciding about competing when giving the year to year answer. I can't blame them a condition like hers has to be hard to train with knowing that it has the potential to flare at any moment.

I would love for them to skate for years to come, but not at the expense of Tessa's health. They know best and I trust that they are making the right decisions.

They likened the surgery to slicing open a sausage to give what is inside more space but of course, the human muscle is not like that. It will heal and close up again and then you will have to think about decompression again not to mention tissue scarring. I do not really want to scare my fellow VM fans but I think this really is a career-threatening condition.

Poor Tessa, it really seems like she's fighting a losing battle here.:(

ITA with you, health comes first.

Sahararainfall, great post and thanks for the information on Tessa's condition. I kind of suspected as much.

Or, we could bomb the bridge now and prevent them of ever retiring!!!!! Who's with me?

.....

For some reason even if there had never been surgeries and the ongoing issues, I never expected V&M to commit to another four years. I just think it's a shame that it's her health (or the health of her legs - not sure if that is the correct way to put it) is going to be the deciding factor in V&M's decision on whether or not to continue. I also hope that this isn't something that will cause Tessa problems even when she's not skating on the amateur level. V&M's description of Tessa's condition as quoted by Sahararainfall sounds really :scream:.

My view is slightly different - they are so naturally competitive and love to skate so much that I think they'd have committed to Sochi (if it weren't for the compartment syndrome). Even now, they don't want to give up competition, despite all they've gone through.

I really admire their determination and persistence, but I think that they will always need to monitor her condition. Let's hope that they (and we) can continue to enjoy their skating.

I guess my view of how long they intended to compete was formed before and around the time of the Olympics. At times I have to remind myself to get out of that mindset. Many teams would be happy to move on with the Olympic and World gold already under their belts feeling that with those goals achieved there would be no reason to stay in.

flowerpower, you are right about Tessa and Scott's competitive nature. More and more I can see that V&M are indeed about more than the medals. If they weren't then they wouldn't have been so adamant about competing this past season even though they only had one shot at skating their FD all the way through. No one who wasn't competitive would tough it out the way Tessa has.

Like V&M seem to be, I'm just going season by season as well. I just hope that Tessa can make it through this season; I feel that the stops and starts (mostly stops) of last season must have really frustrated them.

They're slated for Skate Canada + TEB. I guess that means we can assume they're continuing?

Thank you OlieRow. I was hoping they would be doing Skate Canada when I bought my tickets. Now it's gonna be....."What music are they using?". Can't wait to find out. :)

Looks like a nice golf course. How relaxed and tanned Scott and Tessa look. Tessa has a nice putting stance :)

What? No shot of Kate next to Tessa for a true evaluation of the resemblance?

^^
Are you sure that's her? I found it hard to tell.

Although in the Globe story on William/Kate's activities in Ottawa yesterday, it said that "...inside Rideau Hall, the royal couple met with young Canadian athletes...the Prince, speaking to some Olympians, noted that he watched the Vancouver Olympics and that it was amazing...." and I did wonder if Tessa and Scott might have been invited.
