I've heard the claim made for baseball. The argument is that, as the number of teams has increased, you have less talented people making it into the big leagues. At the same time, you have more international people, and if you're talking about baseball waaaay back, only white people were allowed.

But I do think it's probably true if you compare baseball from forty years ago to now.

I've been thinking about the Lumberjack Games. Trees are still trees, that hasn't changed. But how about saws? Axes? How much have they changed over the years? What about lumberjack boots? Do they now have soles that provide a better grip than the lumberjack boots of 50 years ago?

Assuming that the early 1990s are "the old days," then I say ladies' figure skating.

There's really no one today who can compete athletically with Midori and Tonya on their good days. (Maybe Mao, but she has nowhere near their power.)
