After many years of drought, Queensland in Australia is going through the worst floods in history. So far 9 people have died and there are many missing near Brisbane. And Brisbane is looking at it's highest flood level for many years, including the CBD.

The rains are moving down the south coast of Australia and there is bound to be more plenty more floods as it travels through.

Heard about an awful flash flood this morning on CNN. How horrible. It seemed that there was always a drought, and now this. :(.

I have friends in several friends in South East Queensland including one who lives in Rosewood which is a lesser flood area, she sent me some photos taken from her house about 2 hours ago:

Houses in Queensland are commonly raised with an empty space underneath to help with ventilation, this photo is her two kids standing at ground level under the house.

75% of Queensland has been declared a Disaster Zone :(

It's horrible. I have friends in Brisbane who are preparing for the worst. There hsn't been a flood like this since 1974, although the whole drought/flood thing has been going on forever (see old iconic poem here (http://www.anointedlinks.com/my_country.html))

If anyone is interested, given the number of expat Australians overseas, ABC have lifted the international restrictions on the news feeds on their website, www.abc.net.au . The best up to the minute news and footage is there.

Wow :( Keeping all the Aussies in my thoughts. Hope they stay safe.

My thoughts are with all those affected; as well as their concerned families and friends from all over the world.

The film that CNN is showing is horrific. Cars and people being swept away and some on rooftops awaiting rescue. Stay safe everyone.

I have a friend who's in Brisbane or the Gold Coast on any given day. She usually updates her facebook, but hasn't lately. :( Damn her ever-changing cell phone numbers.

When I visited a few years ago, we were idly talking about house differences. Their houses are up on raised stilts with a concrete centre room. She indicated this was for flooding.

My favorite uncle lives in Brisbane. He's in his 60's now and doesn't have a computer. I can't get through to his number for some reason :(

Probably because the flood made the phone lines go down.

So sad. :( I've seen the videos on the news. I was in Brisbane way back in 1988 for the World Expo (performed with my high school band) so I have wonderful memories of the place. My prayers and best wishes to all in Australia.

Wishes for the well being of all involved. A number of the Australian and New Zealand cyclists are tweeting linds for aid donations.

Was terribly worried about a friend who works at the uni in Toowoomba. Luckily, he was actually in Brisbane yesterday. Otherwise, he likely would have been biking along the creekside at the time the flood hit:eek:.

Of course now the water's heading towards Brisbane... but my friend says he and his girlfriend are at reasonably high ground. The whole thing's really scary:(.
