Hmmm. Oppergard is not really known as a jump specialist, which is what Caroline needs. However, maybe it was more convenient for her to be back training at Artesia, where she trained with coach Li?

Sigh. I thought she making good progress with Gambill.

I've been reading this all day, thinking, I know that, she changed coaches...duh, oh, they mean again.

I wonder if the switch isn't more for a personal reason than professional. I wonder if she was ever happy moving to wherever Tammi Gambill was, whereas she might already have had some contact with Artesia?

training with Yu-Na will give her an indication of her shortcomings in speed and flow. more than any coach can tell her.
I think it's a good move, if only, because of that

My thought exactly.;)

:eek:Wow, totally didn't see this coming! I thought Tammy did wonders for Caroline's technique in a few short months.

Shades of Nicole Bobek and her 1039843097307034985 coaching changes. Does Oppegard have experience in fixing horrid technique? IIRC, the only elite ladies he's coached have been Nikodinov (inconsistent but good technique) and Kim (who already had good technique).

Does Karen Kwan coah with Oppegard? She certainly had lovely technique herself.

yeah that sylvia is such a rabble rouser :mitchell:

Ok I admit it: when I came into this thread and read the first post, my first reaction was to look and see who started the thread (that ended any doubts). There is just a whole new level of credibility when you see Sylvia's name.

Very surprising news indeed. Like others I thought she made wonderful improvement on her flip under Gambill and I don't quite understand why she changed her coach again.
But we never know what's really going on between a skater and a coach so Caroline must have a good reason. ...I hope.
Anyway, if it is already done, then I just wish good luck for her.

Not that surprising really. Zhang is managed by the same agent who has managed Michelle Kwan her entire career. He helped orchestrate Yu-Na moving to train at the Kwan rink when things went sour in Toronto. I see this as a very positive move - if Zhang does not grow from training alongside Yu-Na she will never progress anywhere.

Stick a fork in her, honestly.

She's been moving in the right direction under Gambill.

It's just beyond ridiculous now.

Sorry, all of these coaching changes cannot be beneficial.

She had made such progress in her technique..one has to wonder why she would switch with only a few weeks before US Nationals.

A little bit  about Jason Wong's harsh, but true, tweet. I think we can assume this is about Zhang...

"Bahahaha... Oh Caroline!!! Girl needs a reality check!!!"

To counter all the negativity, I think the change makes sense for a few reasons.

1. Have you seen Zijun Li? Karen Kwan has done wonders for her as a choreographer.

2. I always had an impression of Tammy G. as kind of running a stable of younger skaters. Isn't she coach to like, dozens of skaters? I don't think Peter O. has nearly as many skaters.

3. The Yuna Kim contact high. That's gotta be inspiring.

4. If Angela Nikodinov is any indication of Peter's technical coaching, she'll do great. Her jumps were fabulous, when she did them. Of course part of that could be natural ability, but he had to have something to do with it.

I figured it was better to have a new thread...

This news is confirmed in Zhang's USFS/IceNetwork bio: http://web.icenetwork.com/skaters/detail.jsp?id=100051&mode=I

Very important question, someone answer please if you know anything or offer some speculations.

The question is: Did Karen Kwan, Michelle Kwan, or Yuna Kim have anything to do with convincing Zhang to choose Peter? Did Zhang make this choice of her own accord without any contact with the Kwans or Kim?

All three of them were sent on a secret mission to try to solicit Zhang.

It's been revealed in the latest Wikileaks batch.

I don't think YuNa and Caroline are so close friends.

Well, my question may sound silly, but when Yuna originally choose Peter, it obviously had a lot to do with his relationship with the Kwan Clan. Also, I do know that Michelle Kwan does know Caroline; she has mentored her for at least a skating session or two at the rink. So is it totally out of the question that someone in the Kwan family may have recommended Peter as a coach to Caroline?
