Alexei Yagudin was a rock star in Canada. :rockstar:

G&G were also popular.

Asking if North Americans like Russian skaters is like asking Europeans if they like any American entertainers. :D

Haven't had time to read everyone's answers, but I remember loving Olga Markova. Loving, loving, LOVING her!!! :D I see others have posted Artur Dmietriev and Ilia Klimkin. If I had more time on my hands I would make a much larger list. So many to choose from! :)

Yagudin, early Plushenko, Berezhnaya/Sikuralidze, Gordeeva/Grinkov and Ukrainian Oksana Bauil.
This list sounds about right for me. Most NA are watching on TV only, so these are the skaters that have earned fans.

Ksenia Makarova also has a following in New York near where she lives there.

Maxim Shabalin
Jana Khokhlova

I think G&G, M&D, and B&S really earned a big following among North American fans, simply because they were *so* superior to the rest of the field that it was like, hard not to like them.

I also think a lot of fans liked Elena and Katia because of their cute, doll-like appearance. They never really looked like Russian divas.

You know, I never cared too much for their partners, but I always wanted Maxim and Jana to skate together. I think they would have been lovely together! It's really too bad what happened to Shabalin's knee. :wuzrobbed

Retired skaters:

-Alexei Yagudin (I think he is up to this point the best male skater of all time)
-Goordeeva/Grinkov
-Bereznhaya/Sikhularidze
-Irina Slutskaya (I always liked her better than Kwan)
-Marina Klimova/Sergei Ponomarenko

Current skaters:
(I'm actually liking the new generation of young skaters more than the one from the last years and I think they will fare very well in 2014)

-Elizaveta Tuktamysheva
-Adelina Sotnikova
-Bazarova/Larionov
-Iliushechkina/Maisuradze
-Gerboldt/Enbert (I soooo want these two to become champions some day)
-Bobrova/Soloviev
-Ilinykh/Katsalpov
-Monko/Khaliavin

I always rooted for Anna Kondrashova back in the day - I loved her free skating. Also, Krylova/ Ovsiannikov - they were my favourite Ice Dancers of their day. Can I count Margarita Drobiazko? She is Russian? No? I loved her and Vanagas as well, and they seemed to be fan favourites where ever they skated. (if crowd boos re. their lower than expected marks/ ordinals are an indication).

From Canada here is my list:

Ladies:
- Maria Butryskaya (she was a fighter, and her world championship programs were beautiful) and Irina Slutskaya (as a joyful 15-year-old, and then later when she showed she had the perserverance to work through difficulties). Elena Solokova almost made the list, but that's just because she was very cute. Present-day, no Russian lady really stands out for me, although I enjoy watching Ksenia Makarova. I haven't seen the promising ladies on the JGP, so no comments on them.

Men: Alexei Yagudin! (I personally would tie him with Kurt Browning as the best male skater of all time), Alexander Abt at his best (so much speed and power), Ilia Kulik (ambitious programs that were wonderful when he was on). Present-day, well . . .

Ice dance: Krylova/Ovsyannikov (for their precision, elegance and power; my all-time favourite team before Virtue/Moir arrived on the scene), Gritschuk/Platov (but they weren't as precise as Krylova/Ovsyannikov, so they're in second place for me), Khokhlova/Novistski (especially her). Present-day, I like Ilinykh/Katsalapov, and will follow them with interest to see if they develop as I think they should.

Pairs: I didn't start watching figure skating until the early 1990's, but I got to see some of the programs of the wonderful Gordeeva/Grinkov. I also liked Berezhnaya/Sikharulidze for the speed and fluidity, and Leonova/Khvalko as professionals. Present-day, I love what I saw of Iliushechkina/Maisuradze at Skate Canada, and I also like Bazarova/Larionov, especially her.

After Sarajevo, I was just sure that Anna Kondrashova and Tiffany Chin were going to dominate everything through Calgary (and was really looking foward to a quadrennial of really beautiful skating)...You don't want to ask me to predict anything about skating...:wall:

The first skaters that come to my mind are G/G and Alexei Yagudin

It seems like almost everybody likes Yagudin, regardless of their nationality.

 What's not to like? The best male singles skater ever, IMO.
