View Full Version : Hero war dog euthanized by mistake...

Target was brought back by her human Sgt Terry Young after a tour of duty which included the dog saving Young's life. Target unfortunately slipway from her home and when Young went to the shelter to get his dog back the shelter informed him the dog had been put down by mistake. Such a sad end for a great animal. RIP Target. :(

The article leaves out so much about their heroics, along with a dog named Sasha who did not survive. Target did not merely save Sgt. Terry Young from being injured by shrapnel. She and the two other dogs attacked a suicide bomber, preventing him from entering the soldiers' barracks and killing 50 people.

Sgt. Young wrote about what happened that night here (http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1613398.html) and how he got her to the US here (http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1655396.html).

This story left me sobbing for hours last night. I had been following Target's and Rufus' story since the very beginning and donated both money and time to bringing them to the US.

Wow, amazing dogs. :respec: (And a heartfelt shout-out to Gazpacho for supporting this effort!)

RIP Target. Sad sad ending, but at least there's solace in that he was euthanized (may I dream that it was painless?) versus neglected to death. Unlike thousands of dogs alive today whose existence is daily torture, he was a lucky dog in life and obviously loved. And WOW did he ever serve we humans.

It's heartbreaking. I remember hearing about them trying to get the dog over here. So sad.

Thanks Gazpacho. :) Here is a video of another soldier being welcomed home by his extremely happy pooch. (just so we could end the thread on a happier note)

A few more details about the sad ending to a brave dog's life in this NYT story (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/19/us/19dog.html?hp). Just heart-breaking. :(
