Hello everyone,
I think I've read somewhere a while ago that there would be a qualifying competition right before Worlds..for example, if the united states qualify alissa and Rachael at the US nationals, then Mirai, Ashley and others could attempt that competition and try to qualify there for Worlds? Does that make sense? Has anyone heard of that before?
Thank you so much!

No, the US can only send a maximium of 2 ladies to worlds. This year skaters have to have a minium score to be allowed to compete so some skaters may have to compete to get that minium score to qualify, perhaps thats what you heard. For example Volosozhar/Trankov can't compete until Febraury because she has switched countries. Should they qualify for Worlds at Russian nationals they will have to do an international competition to achieve the minium score before they can go.

There is going to be a qualifying round at ISU Championships.

Information on who has to go through it and who qualifies directly should be in the ISU communication which lists all the ISU Council decisions.

HisWeirness posted it in the ISU Council thread as well.

So far in the GP, the only skaters who haven't reached the minimum score are Turoczi / Major, HUN (SD-NHK, 15.81 < 17) and Diane Szmiett CAN (FS-NHK 22.30 < 25 and FS-CoC 24.90 < 25).

However, neither one is likely to qualify for a spot at Euros/4CC/Worlds within their own federations.

Hungary has two spots for Euros and Worlds so Turoczi/Major will most likely be on the team.

They have another GP event so they are probably going to reach the minimum score there.

Ugh, I don't even know what do say about Diane Szmiett.

Look at her reaction.

I always feel badly for a skater who doesn't appear to be in the proper mental and/or physical state to compete for all the world to see. It's not like Szmiett is deliberately tanking.

You're totally right, deleting my post. :/

I don't understand the minimum score for the Free dance. The minimum FD technical score is 28 points in the ISU rules, but 27 points in both announcements for Euros and Worlds? What does count?

Yeah, something must be up with her, she's probably injured or depressed or gets wicked nervous before she skates or something. She's never been a great skater but she's certainly capable of being much, much better than she has been recently. I feel bad and hope she figures out what's wrong, addresses the issue, and bounces back soon. It's hard seeing someone be so miserable.

Thanks to Ziggy and Sylvia to linking to my post about the ISU rules (also linked to in my signature as "Summary of 2010 ISU Rule Changes").

Diane Szmiett has met (http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs_pb_00007793.htm) the ISU minimum techinical scores (SP/FS) based on her results last season.
Turoczi / Major should be able to use their 24.20 in OD TES (http://www.isuresults.com/results/wjc2010/SEG008.HTM) from 2010 Jr. Worlds and their 30.47 FD TES (http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs_pb_00010102.htm) from 2010 NHK.

That is an interesting discrepancy.

ISU Communication 1621 (http://isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=1893) item #16 lists the minimum free dance technical score as 28. I looked through all of the communications released since then and nothing has been issued that supersedes this statement in 1621.

The technical rules state:

Minimum Total Technical Scores:
To be entered into and participate in the Championships/Preliminary Round of a Senior ISU Championships a Competitor/Couple must have reached in an ISU recognized International Competition (as per Article 38, paragraph 7 and Rule 107, paragraphs 1 to 9) during the ongoing or immediately preceding season the applicable minimum Total Technical Scores (points). The applicable minimum Total Technical Scores shall be decided for each season by the ISU Council based on a joint proposal from the respective Technical Committee and the Sports Directorate and shall be published in an ISU Communication.

All I can think is that it is a typo in the Worlds and Euros announcements.

Oh, and the ISU calls the first competitive round the "Preliminary Round" and not the qualification round.

Does that mean that a result from an event like Nebelhorn doesn't count?

Diane Szmiett had 124.87 total for her 6th place finish there earlier in the season
