View Full Version : NBC Skating Commentators Announced: Return of Terry Gannon

I have to disagree with this. Dick talked about himself a lot. In fact he is the only person I have ever heard who used the term "Button camel" to refer to a particular variation of the camel spin.
I have to disagree with your disagreement. Uncle Dick does not bring up the "When I was competing..." reference very often when commentating. He usually only does it when Terry asks him about his competive days. Dick does bring up obscure references about people in the Art, but I see it more as a way to educate the mass.
I'm not liking David Petellier's commentary so far. He and Tracy Wilson have zero chemistry.

I loved UnivSports' commentating team for SkCanada. Terry is fantastic and the skating specialists all excellent. I was particularly bowled over by Michael Weiss' delivery (voice), knowledge, toned-down reactions, appropriate humor, etc. Tara is wonderful. Peter C is most enjoyable, little Russian words and all. Tanith is sooooo great and should absolutely be the one doing this, now that she has just retired from eligibles...but I miss Suzie Wynne a lot! (I hope that UniSports might bring-on Suzie for an event or two, when Tanith might be busy with SOI.)

I really enjoyed the NBC NHK commentary- I thought Micahel and Tara did a fine job (didn't know who the 3rd person was)- however, I WISH they would call the jumps. At least once Michael said something like "a nice 3-jump combination" which I feel like anyone, even someone who doesn't know the sport could identify. It would have been nice to know what the 3 jumps were- because I mix the toe jumps up! So while Scott use to grunt out the jump names as they did them, at least he identified them!
Michael also called a sequence a combination- but I feel like anyone who knows the difference would catch that and anyone who didn't probably wouldn't care otherwise.
At least for the NBC broadcast- I don't recall Michael talking much about the quad, at least not in relation to him doing them...

I thought Michael and (nice surprise for me) Tara did a very good job. Of course, Terry is a helluva commentator. So nice not to hear constipated Scotty.
Tara's official website just re-tweeted something that has me a little confused:
Olympic Gold Medalist, Tara Lipinski has joined NBC's Figure Skating commentators panel
I thought she already did commentary for NHK? Is this what they are referring to? Is this just a guest spot? Or is this the best case scenario and they're bringing her in permanently to replace Bezic??

I sent a kudos to NBCSports about the commentators. Encouraged them to use them in Sochi!

People enjoyed Tanith yammering away during those programs????
Her comment about C&P in the past being all about the elements and nothing in between was one of the most  comments I've ever heard in all the years I've watched skating.
It felt like opposite day was happening and no one told me.
But I guess if people like Susie Wynne's halting, awkward, obtrusive, inane commentary... :shuffle:

Although I would understand you disagreeing with me if what I wrote was opinion, I don't understand how you can disagree with a fact. Dick did indeed refer to the skater's camel spin as a "Button camel." And he is the only person I have ever heard refer to his ex-wife, Slavka Kohout, as "Slavka Button."
I agree that more recent commentary has changed into a pattern of Terry bringing up Dick's accomplishments and Dick seeming to shrug them off. Yet this has followed a long history of Dick saying a number of self-serving things -- including some examples of what he did at the Olympics.
If people enjoy his commentary, good. I don't want to spoil your enjoyment. But that does not negate the fact that he has made quite a few self-serving comments over the years.

Havent' heard Tanith this year.
Tara and Michael make me MISS Scotty. I really dislike them. Tara is particularly strange... On one hand she seems to complain that Caroline Zhang is learning a new techinique as if that's bad and then thinks that other skaters should learn a new technique.. Well, then it would be "bad to change" wouldn't it Tara? All in all, she seems to be talking to hear the sound of her own voice. Terry had to rescue her at least once last week when she just went rambiling off somewhere LOL!
Enjoy hearing Terry again.

OK, here's one tiny complaint about the otherwise-wonderful Peter Carruthers: What's up with Peter's fixation on single men's butt spins??? It reminds me of Uncle Dick's long-time fixation on women pair skater's fannies sticking out when going down into the death spiral. LOL!!!

You can tell Lipinski really enjoys commentating, last year I didn't think she did that well but this year seems like she really improved. Still miss Button/Peggy tho, but I guess it's time to move on for the new.

Have Tara or Michael had ANY broadcasting or communications training? Yes, their insights are great at times, but Tara especially does seem to not understand communication skills. Isn't she nearing 30? I am not sure if it is her voice pattern or the cadence of it that doesn't match the pro commentators. Maybe I have it wrong and they want her to just speak as though she is talking to someone in her own living room. Michael and Tanith also need a bit more training. They try to rush their comments or something which I don't think the pros do. CBC commentators have it down fairly nicely. Also, I kind of miss Mr. Button's comments in the background.
Well, I wouldn't expect folks who just started out to be as seasoned as the people who've been doing it for 20 years, lol!!
I think they're off to a good start, although I did think Lipinski let herself get carried away on a couple of occasions. But I enjoy her insight.
It was so wonderful to hear Terry's voice again after all this time. I didn't even mind Michael Weiss (who is pretty good BTW).

I am watching Cup of China replay on Universal. SHUT UP TARA. She talked almost non stop through the last skater "some skaters don't relate to the music, but you can see that Lenova does" Discussions of the 13 year olds coming up and on and on and on... She makes Scott and Sandra look downright QUIET!
Thank goodness I had already seen the skate on IN. LOL!
