There is controversy in New Zealand after a tv host made fun of Delhi's chief minister Sheila Dikshit's name. The name sounds similar to "Dixit", and I am guessing that is not how he pronounced it.

:scream:

Sticking with the pool, one of the most interesting stories so far is Geoff Huegill's weight loss of 45kg.

The main focus in the article is on Canada's performance today/yesterday, but there's also a pretty big chunk on the ongoing problems plaquing these Games.

CBC Sports ~ Canada adds 15 medals on Day 5 in Delhi (http://www.cbc.ca/commonwealthgames/story/2010/10/08/spc-delhi-troubles.html)

Yikes at some of the things that's happened.

Reassuring to see that it's not only the British media that can take a negative story and run with it. ;)

Name of the day: Brent Newdick. :D

You know one thing I haven't seen mentioned, and deserves to be mentioned, is this...

The Commonwealth Games, AFAIK, are the only major Multi Sport Games where Disabled Athletes are considered every bit a part of the Team as their Able Bodied Teammates. Not only that, but their medal wins are not looked at something that's there just to give Disabled Athletes a showcase and only that, but are Medals just like all of the other Medals earned at the CG's and are counted in the Medal Tally.

Someone was wondering why these Games even matter anymore at the beginning of this thread, well, there's your answer. :)

I LOVE this quality about the Commonwealths! Benoit Huot was interviewed yesterday and he brought up this exact point. It means so much for them to be on the same field and treated equally and hopes it is a stepping stone to full integration.

Congrats to Allan Davis for showing his Worlds bronze was no fluke by taking the gold in the cycling road race. Favorite Cavendish came in 7th, but won some fans by his more relaxed attitude to some of the athlete village conditions, and refusing his pro team's offer to put him up in a private hotel during the games:

We’re in India,” said Cavendish. “It’s not a Western country. “I think it's quite ignorant to assume we were going to going to be in a Western-style country. I've been to India before on holiday - I knew what it was going to be like."

And it's not just Le Petit Roi's triumph either. It's the first time Canada's gone one *and* two in that event at the Commonwealth Games. :) The Silver Medalist is also Alex's Syncro partner in the next Men's event tomorrow, so to know he's just as on as Alex is very exciting looking forward to that Syncro Tower event. :D
