So the "worst songs" thread made me remember that a few years back, I realized I had missed about 15 years of good rock, pop and alternative music. (Detoured into country for a long while there.)

I asked for recommendations for melodic rock here, and got some great ideas, most of which I bought, and then thanks to ITunes I got a lot more great ideas, and now I have helped Steve Jobs stay a billionaire.

But there's always more that I'm not hearing about because 1) I'm middle-aged and 2) daughter is sort of a music snob in her own right and her recommendations are limited. So. The last few songs I bought were by All Time Low, Every Avenue, The Raconteurs, Sara Bareilles and Mayday Parade.

I'm thinking you may really like Muse. You like Raconteurs, and they're a bit alternative, yet melodic. The rest of what you listed are melodic. So Muse is my choice for you.

You might like Gomez and Snow Patrol.

The Raconteurs are actually pretty much Jack White, and Jack White is also the White Stripes and the Dead Weather. In each band, he's completely different, so it's not necessarily the case that if you like Raconteurs you'll like the others, but you might, so give them a listen.

I agree with Garr, and I would add Death Cab for Cutie (and the lead singer's side project The Postal Service) to the list.

Have you listened to any pop radio lately? I could give you the names of a couple of hundred songs I really like. Here's a few:

Missy Higgins - Where I Stood
Amy MacDonald- This is the Life
Adele- Chasing Pavements
White Rabbits- Percussion Gun
Steve Earle - Sparkle and Shine (Alt country, but I've only heard it on my satellite radio)
Damien Rice- The Blowers Daughter
Maroon Five-This Love
Fall Out Boy -This Ain't a Scene
My Chemical Romance- I'm Not Okay (Best song ever, if you are angry/down), The Black Parade
Green Day- Boulevard of Broken Dreams

I like some of the Urban radio stuff too. Eminem's latest album is brilliant, and I loved Kanye West's last one. The middle aged people I work with only want to listen to the classic rock of their youth, and they are missing so much good music.

I've recommended 30 Seconds to Mars to you before, but you didn't like them. :drama:

But from their new album, give a listen to Kings and Queens and Closer to the Edge. You might like those. (also, parts of the Closer to the Edge video were filmed in Omaha. But you can't see me. :drama: :drama: )

Poor PL. I just can't get into them. It's not that I don't like noisy, it's just their noisy is in the wrong key or something. :slinkaway

Garr was my guru previously. I will try Muse, I have a few White Stripes songs. I have a lot of Fallout Boy and All-American Rejects, one or two MCM songs (but not the  one, that sounds useful) and two Death Cab for Cutie numbers. (ITunes was just invented for me, I can like a group and still only want three or four of their songs, I have a singles mind.)

Oh, and a few of rjb's pop songs as well. I'm too old for Missy Huggins and like her anyway. We won't even discuss my embarrassing taste for Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson. Urban, nope. I grew up with real urban, damn it, meaning the Philly sound and Motown. That hiphoppy stuff is when I stand on my status as a 50something and say, thus far and no further.

I forgot to recommend my daughters current favourite band- Hey Rosetta (http://www.myspace.com/heyrosetta). Their song "Red Heart" was used in the Olympic Montage video.

Another Canadian band worth checking out is The Weakerthans.

But those songs aren't noisy! That's why it took me so long to like their new album. :shuffle:

Fine. Check out Neon Trees. Melodic rock, kinda tame. And their drummer is a chick. So that makes them cooler than they would be otherwise.

Neon Trees - Animal

It's on our seeks list on our Sirius Radio right now. I spend almost 2 hours a day driving to work, and we spend a lot of time in our car. I've discovered so much new music that I'd never get to hear on my terrestrial radio and their 20 song playlists. It's the best $13 a month I spend.

But only if no one judges me.

Some of these you may already know. I'm not great at recommending music (and my tastes tend towards generically mainstream although not super modern) but I do like All American Rejects, Sara Bareilles, and Kelly Clarkson (own it!). So you might like some of what I like. I'm in to the Goo Goo Dolls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdYWuo9OFAw&ob=av2n) (90s I know, but they are still making music and I love them and don't judge me), Daughtry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJzBcKM3ZIE&ob=av2e), Augustana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o7GCiwdw0A), Third Eye Blind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kiHBFwGsUE), Pink (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJfFZqTlWrQ) (because she's GREAT when you are angry), Green Day
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U2K1ski728), Saving Jane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzvR9bm1OtE)

I stuck in youtube links of some of my favorite songs because it might make it easier to tell if you like someone's sound and want to know more.

Another great thing to do to find music is to make a pandora (http://www.pandora.com/) station for a group you like and see what other music it suggests. You can tailor what you get by telling it that you don't like something.

Hey I just realized that Kings and Queens is played in the promo of some new show on the CW!

Off to listen to Closer to the Edge.

If you like Sara Bareilles, there's a good chance you'll like Erin McCarley too. When I heard her first single "Pony (It's OK)," I was hooked. She's more pop-rock than rock, but her debut album is excellent. Also, Aimee Mann. Her last couple of efforts haven't been that inspiring IMO, but she has a lot of good songs from earlier albums. I'd also recommend Pat Benatar's 1993 album Gravity's Rainbow, which was her last great one. I believe it's on iTunes too. It's not as radio-friendly as some of her '80s stuff, but it is definitely melodic and rocks pretty hard. Oh, and one more. For some great melodic rock, I'd recommend PJ Harvey's Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea from 2000. There are at least half a dozen good songs on there. Unfortunately, it does have some explicit lyrics, though. Hope that helps. :)

Given your tastes, I'd recommend the following:

The Avett Brothers (they started out bluegrass/country, but some of their recent stuff is more folk/pop):

I and Love and You is the title track and current single:

Mumford and Sons are kind of similar. This is their current single, Little Lion Man:

Check out some of the other tracks on their album, Sigh No More. If you liked Fleet Floxes, you might like them. Not quite as atmospheric, but kind of a bit in that vein.

You might try some of Muse's stuff, too:

I'm really liking the most recent album by Ray Lamontagne. This is his single, Beg, Borrow or Steal:

Also, if you were a fan of the Drive-By Truckers when Jason Isbell sang for them, you may want to check out Jason Isbell's solo work. I'm generally not a country fan, but I really like this song, Dress Blues:

You might like some of Pearl Jam's more melodic or stripped down songs like their more recent Just Breathe and Eddie Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack:

One of my favorite albums this year is Tom Petty's new album. Love the single, I Should Have Known It:

If you like Sara Bareilles, you might try Adele and Sara McLachlan's latest:

Did you like the Raising Sand album by Allison Krauss and Robert Plant? If so, you might like the album coming out this week from Robert Plant because it's supposed to be kind of similar -- Americana meets rock.

Ok, going through my iPod. :) Sorry for the long and random list but I hope you'll find some stuff you like...it's relatively recent music for the most part since I really started getting into music with Keane in 2005.
