From the 2001 Worlds - 2002 Olympics, she was extremely skinny. I believe that was the season Frank Carroll infamously said "You can eat, or you can compete" in some article.

HD cam version of Belbin & Agosto's Use Somebody from the 2nd day show.

They do drop the scarf during the performance but make a nice recovering job. :) Otherwise, a great program.

Actually that's not entirely true. Height does not automatically corollate with having long limbs, just as being petite doesn't mean one has short limbs. I've seen quite a few tall people with long torsos and short legs. Famous Russian ballerina in the 70s-80s, Natalia Makarova is 5'2" and renowned for her long limbs. Current ballerinas from the Mariinsky and Bolshoi such as Katya Osmolkina, Natalia Osipova, Evgenia Obraztsova, and Ekaterina Krysanova to name just a few, are all 5'3" or under and definitely not short-limbed by any definition.

Skating will build up one's quadriceps to the degree that one's legs, if prone to muscularity, will appear to be bulky or chunky. That's why in ballet, serious students and professional dancers are discouraged to take up skating. It's all about keeping a sleek line, which is more important on the stage than on the ice. Unlike dancers, skaters are constantly gliding in smooth motion and their bodies are seen by the audience from all sides, so having beautiful lines aren't requirements but more like a bonus.

I more just meant it's expected that someone who's 5'5" would have longer limbs than someone who is 5'2". Yuna has very long legs and arms, but it's not like her torso is extremely short. Someone of Michelle's height who had very long legs would have an extremely short torso, and that could also make one look "thicker" or whatnot than someone who is just taller/longer overall like Yuna.

And ballet is different because built up quadriceps and arm muscles are not desired, so someone of Michelle's height and proportions could look more willowy if she was a ballerina because the legs and arms would be less muscular and therefore thinner. Further, the average ballerina is taller than the average figure skater. To be a member of the corps de ballet in most companies women are generally on the taller side, 5'4" is usually the minimum up to about 5'8" or 5'9" mac. The majority of short ballerinas are soloists or play children's roles.

I mainly follow Russian and European companies, European ballerinas do not dance children's roles, maybe that's the case in some American companies. Petite ballerinas tend to be cast in soubrette roles like Kitri or Aurora, so there's definitely type-casting going on. I'd say most women corps dancers average about 5'3" to 5'6", being too tall or too short won't work for a corps dancer in a major or renowned company. If a ballerina is on the petite or tall side, she has to be extra good in order to be in a company, because she can only be a soloist or principal.

Back to skating, Oksana Baiul is only 5'2"-5'3" but she's built long, similar to Yuna.

michelle has never been "fat" but I don't agree with the idea that her body type is just more "big boned" either. I keep on hearing comments recently about that all over the web, as if ppl forget she's a grad student who hasn't competed in years, she's not in competition mode. most women would love to have her current body

look how thin and delicate she was during her competition years

on skates her legs never looked "short" at all either. she's just not as long limbed as yu-na. but why would you compare a 20 year old at her peak to a retired 30 year old. when someone's as tiny as michelle, even five pounds seem to make a big difference
Even at her competition peak, Michelle looked compact compared to Maria Butyrskaya, who was so willowy she looked downright delicate on the ice. It's just body type, I'm not saying Michelle needs/needed to lose weight or anything. Her skating spoke for itself and her extension was great so she didn't need to be more long-limbed to look good.

A lot of long-limbedness is illusion as well. My friend and I have the same inseam, but she's always always expressed jealousy over my "long" legs over her "stumpy" ones. We were bored one night and took various measurements and found that I had bigger calves and was smaller around the knees and thighs. I think we figured out why my legs always look longer.
