Sorry if there is a thread out there like this, if so I guess it will be merged.

Who are some people you really admire, especially on the intellectual level? I find Simon Schama to be an absolute genius, especially when it comes to his narrative abilities. He has this insane ability to sound so poetic. I have his dvd on the power of art as well as his book. Here is some of his work on youtube, thought some of you would enjoy it.

Caravaggio Power of Art:
Part 1 (warning: there is some sword fighting/violence)

Also David Power of Art:

I'll post some more important people a bit later. Hope you watch the videos they're really well done.

There are numerous more parts and other videos on youtube.

I do, but Joni had such an influence on me growing up (I have been smitten with her since I was 13. All my friends were into Kiss, I was into Joni Mitchell... :shuffle:). Lyrically nobody has come close in her nearly 4 decades of recording. Melodically she is a genius but her lyrics are sublime. As Elvis Costello once said, she can paint a vivid picture in 5 or 6 words.

Also, Joni is not a folk singer. She was when she did her first couple of albums but she developed. Laura to me was more just folk.

The first person who came to mind was Roger Ebert. Reading this article from Esquire (http://www.esquire.com/features/roger-ebert-0310) brought tears to my eyes. He's been through so much, yet continues to live life to the fullest and refuses to feel sorry for himself.

On a working level, I really admire director Christopher Nolan's leadership skills. In 10 years he went from shooting a $6,000 film over a year of Saturdays with friends, to the $185-million studio behemoth that was The Dark Knight. The trajectory is stunning, and he doesn't seem to have lost his cool at any point along the way. I've heard from people who've worked with him, that he never raises his voice, but he puts high expectations on the crew and they all trust him because he's always at ease. I just can't help but admire that.

I also admire musician Tori Amos, because I think she's cool.

Oh, and Prancer too. Prancer rocks. :respec:

Of current people, I really admire and respect John and Hank Green. John and Hank are known on Youtube as the Vlogbrothers, and spent all of 2007 posting a video every weekday as a way of keeping in touch with each other. They're still posting videos and have quite a large fanbase. I know many consider Youtube people to be self-centered of fame seeking, but John and Hank use their popularity to inspire kids and young adults to embrace intelligence and learning. They discuss books, current events, history, science, and many other awesome, nerdy things. :)

John is particularly witty, wise, and wicked smart. He writes excellent books (mainly aimed towards teens, but many outside of the target demographic find them enjoyable). Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska are especially worth reading.
