I don't think it's the clay that's so bad. Bogota has very, very high altitude; which makes the balls bounce weird.

I'm curious as to what effect the [new? odd?] balls are having on the US team in particular. How long did they know about these, and have they or haven't they been practicing with them? I've never seen such bad first serve % from both Mardy and Sam.

Gah, down 0-2 in sets, Sam let go 3 set points in the third, and then got broke himself. Santiago serving for the rubber. Sam got his clocked clean the first set, but has had many break chances the past two sets.

1-1 after day 1. I'll take it. US should win the doubles tomorrow. If Giraldo beats Fish on Sunday (which has a good chance of happening) no way do I trust Querrey in a winner take all match after watching him today. I'd prefer to roll the dice with Isner instead.

The hilarity (https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs305.ash2/58573_481033620999_277527820999_7614457_6225010_n. jpg) of the Serbian Davis Cup team is unmatched.

:rollin:

It looks like (and seems to be playing like) quicksand. :shuffle:

It canīt be worse that the Austrian clay court where USA played some years ago, that clay ate balls.

Beefcake, my mind canīt stop singing "fear the worm" :drama:

I'd trust the pretty much inflappable Isner, too, over shaky Sammy in a decider rubber... anytime/anysurface ... especially out-of-USA. And this even "before" considering his :fragile: performance today. Sam, whoa ... I'm shocked at how empathically you were beaten today.

Mardy says he's ready to play doubles tomorrow if called on. Fish just had a 4-hour, 5-set match ... and plays again on Sunday. And in altitude. Hmmm, he wants three matches? Well, we'll see. Maybe Fish for doubles, then Isner for reverse singles rather than Fish?

PMac is keeping his options open:

"I feel good about our doubles. We have three players who have played together so there are a lot of options. I like that we have three or four players available tomorrow and Sunday."

Back from the Canada vs Dominican Republic tie.

It was fun AND we're 2 - 0 up after day one with Polansky and Raonic winning! :cheer2:

Going to see the dubs tomorrow. Canadian GOAT and Frank Dancevic are taking on Luis Delgado / Jose Hernandez.

Megi, what city was the Canada/DR tie played in? Indoors or outdoors? Any idea what attendance was?

The tie is being played in Toronto. They're using the Grandstand (outdoor) court at the Rexall Centre where the Rogers Cup is always held.

As for attendance, it's hard to judge today because they brought in several groups and schoolchildren in. They probably did that because the Friday tickets weren't selling well as the first match started at 11. Should be much better on the weekend.

The atmosphere was still great, though. Very friendly which is remarkable considering it's the Davis Cup, after all :) I guess having only about two fans of the visiting team might have something to do with that. ;)

So Fish/Isner are playing doubles today instead of Harrison/Isner. Playing 2 unknown scrubs from Colombia so USA should prevail in this one setting the stage for tomorrow's singles matches.

Kudos to France for advancing to the Davis Cup final. Llodra/Clement won in straight sets so France clinches 3-0.

Czech Republic won the doubles with Berdych/Stepanek over Djokovic/Zim. in 4 sets. The 2 man team from the Czech Republic is now one win away from playing France for the Davis Cup.

That had to be one of the ugliest doubles matches I've ever seen. Fortunately, cause of all the college football on, I didn't watch it all but instead kept going back to it to keep my eye on it. Looked awful. At least Fish/Isner won and now USA leads 2-1 going into tomorrow's 2 singles ties.

Mardy Fish needs to go out tomorrow and take care of business and beat Santiago Giraldo. Knowing Fish not sure if it will happen though. I don't think my nerves can handle a winner take all 5th match. Wonder if Patrick McEnroe will go with Querrey or Isner tomorrow if Fish loses? I pray he doesn't have to worry about it.

If Fish loses (I believe that Mardy will wrap up the USA tie in three, maybe four, sets), PMac must go with Big John over Sam. The math is obvious: Sam was off Friday (quite off), and John was strong today. (John is also far better in pressure situations!)

When Isner got in his first serves today, the point was OVER. And "that" is saying something about how "on" John's serve was ... because they were playing on what looked to be a giant memory foam mattress covered with tons of ground cinnamon.

This freaky combination of altitude, "special" ball, and Davis Cup atmosphere sure did make for an odd - but entertaining - match today. I still cannot believe that I saw a man double fault three times in a single game (Mardy) ... and still win the game.

Mardy needs to launch a career as doubles specialist when his singles play winds down, because his on-court communication, deft touch, and net play are perfect for the ATP doubles event.

So Djokovic came through and beat Berdych in 4 sets setting up a winner take all 5th match between Tipsarevic and Stepanek to decide who goes to the Davis Cup final vs France. Verrrry interesting.

I believe if France plays Czech Rep. then France will host the final (giving them all 4 ties this year at home). If Serbia wins then I think they flip a coin to see who hosts since the 2 countries have never played in Davis Cup before.

Uh oh.....Mardy Fish down a break to Giraldo in the first set 5-3. :( I don't feel too good about Fish's chances for winning this match. Wish I could but I don't.

OK, Mardy Fish did much much better in the 2nd set taking it 6-3 so its now a set apiece. Giraldo is starting to feel the pressure which is good for the USA.

Tipsarevic won the 1st set over Stepankek 6-0!

Also, Austria/Israel tied at 2 apiece. In the 5th fifth and final match Martin Fisher leads Harel Levy 2 sets to 1.
