WOW, what another day of tennis at the US Open. I guess the Nadal/Lopez match didn't end till something like 1:15am. I wasn't awake to see the end of it. For Nadal its business as usual. The guy really is amazing.

Heartbreaker for Sam Querrey. Such a tough match against Wawrinka. Now for the 2nd year in a row no US man makes it to the QF's.

Verdasco/Ferrer was a war as well. Glad Verdasco came thru. Guy is a total bull out there.

The 2 women's QF's were good too. Very competitive matches. I expect Kim to beat Venus now in the semi's.

People sure got their monies worth yesterday.

Very quietly Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan is having a great tournament. He's in the finals of mens doubles with his partner from India Rohan Bopanna and he's also in the mixed doubles finals with Kveta Peshke from the Czech Republic.

If Qureshi/Bopanna make it to the mens final maybe it will help the relations between India and Pakistan. Of course I'll be rooting for my faves, the Bryan brothers, to win it all. ;)

Patrick McEnroe picks his Davis Cup team for the upcoming tie against Colombia:

Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey, John Isner, and Ryan Harrison

I'm shocked and a little disappointed that he passed over on the Bryan brothers. Beefcake, a couple of months ago when this draw came out you mentioned this might be the best team for this match-up. I guess you were right. Apparently McEnroe wanted at least 3 singles players for the tie. Had it been me I would have gone with Fish & Querrey and the Bryan brothers. Why give up a certain pt with the Bryan brothers? When was the last time Isner/Querrey played together? Its been awhile hasn't it?

Falla and Giraldo will be real competition since the match is on clay. Hopefully the US will still have enough fire-power to win this otherwise we fall back into zonal play which would be a total embarrassment for US tennis. It is good to see young Ryan Harrison on the team but I would have preferred the Bryan brothers and their 16-2 davis cup record be there instead.

Fingers crossed this strategy doesn't backfire on McEnroe in his last davis cup tie.

She is overrated since especialy when she was in her prime she was talked about as if she were a legend of tennis on par with the Williams which she clearly never was. She was given more hype and praise than Henin who in reality is a far better and overall more accomplished player. And now no longer in her prime she is overrated since she is picked the favorite or one of the favorites to win alot of these slams but has really done nothing results wise to earn such a notion.

Todays result was as it should be. Wozniacki is just a better player than Maria right now'

Agreed completely! I wonder if Hingis came back whether she would be given the same hype. On a related note, Ithink Venus run ends in the semis. I like Venus but I am realistic about her game. She has not beaten Kim on hardcourts in a long time.

Strange team. I agree I would have taken Fish, Querrey, and the Bryan Brothers. Isner is overrated and dumping a doubles specialist just to give way over his head kid Harrison a taste of the big time as a passenger is stupid. He could have still been brought as a hitting partner couldnt he have.

Whee! The above means ... it'll be: USA 4 Colombia 1. :cheer2:

PMac says the Bryan dissing is due to altitude concerns (www.insidetennis.com/2010/09/odd-men-bryan-bros-left-davis-cup-roster/). :o

Poor PR. But it's along the train-of-thought that I agree with. Late season is when we see much more breaking down/exhaustion/etc. Patrick is hedging his bets, trying to have a safety net there just in case. The Bryans are a guaranteed 1 point when healthy. But they're a guaranteed -1 point (or -2 if said injury/sickness happens between team confirmation the opening matches!) when being thrown into a singles match for an injured/sick teammate. The Bros will be back (likely next round), when the scenario is more fitting.

Isner is overrated? If you say so. What he is is unflappable, and we'll need that in the racous atmosphere the USA team will be competing in. Isner is also a fairly good clay court player, as is Sam. Either or both will compete well in singles, if chosen. And the two of them give us a fighting chance in doubles. Fish, despite his failure vs. Nole this week, is peaking. He'll likely be singles #1, or perhaps PMac will wait n' watch the three before determining singles slots?

The clay will be as slow as Colombia can make it, with some rubber cement thrown in for good measure. A challenge no matter who the team is. PMac has set himself up for huge criticism here, but I believe he's done the right thing.

Oh, I simply must give a cheer for the most fantastic thing about this USA Davis Cup team ...

:cheer: :biggrinbo NO JAMES BLAKE! :cat: :encore:

Los Senores Robredo y Granollers didn't seem happy before warm-ups, talking to some mean lookin' official lady.

Damn I wish I had volume at the Reference Desk!

Wow, they're really not happy, another official came over between the sets.

Anybody with volume got the dirt? ;)

ETA: Bob and Mike are into the final!!! :cheer2:

:respec: Good, hope they take this Slam! Though most mens doubles teams would kill for a Slam title every third or fourth year, the Bryans' tracking at 1 Slam title a year for the past eight+ years just ... doesn't represent their greatness enough.

Especially considering how consistent they've been / how close they come each Slam to the hardware in the past 35 Grand Slams ...

Bryan/Bryan Slam Results Since 2002 (their breakthrough year):
WON TITLE: 8 (+ another this weekend!)
RUNNER-UP: 8 (ouch, so close!)
SEMIFINAL: 6
QUARTERS: 8
3rd ROUND: 4
2nd ROUND: 1 (this year's French)
1st ROUND: 0

Ignoring juniors as usual, but it was brought to my attention (by people, gasp, not giving 100% attention to their work) that the American guys are tearing up their draw.

Dayum if they aren't! 7 yankees in the final 16, including my favorite boy, Jack Sock. :P

I think Venus's run ends in the semis. I like Venus but I am realistic about her game. She has not beaten Kim on hardcourts in a long time.

This is Venus's first GS semi since 2009 Wimbledon. Up to this point, she's had a kind of easy draw too: Mandy Minella in the third round, Selena Gomez in the fourth round, and iCarly in the quarterfinals. ;) Seriously, though, she hasn't had to face anybody like Sharapova or Azarenka yet. Kim will be her first big test, and I expect that Kim will prevail. It could go three sets, though.

Speaking of Sharapova, I thought it was interesting that Wozniacki said, "I made her do those errors." That was a bit of an overstatement IMO. I was also surprised that Wozniacki was arguing so much with the official on that one point tonight--she'd have been better off just brushing it off, I think. I was impressed with Cibulkova in the second set. If Vera can hold things together, she has a real chance in the semis.

1st set Soderling vs. Fed and you can already cut the tension with a knife! :watch:

It's "Gone with the Wind" out there!

Robin has some junk in his trunk, mmmm. :swoon:
