Sepp Blatter apologizes to England and Mexico for referee errors that helped eliminate them from the World Cup.
FIFA, he promises, will reopen debate on video technology (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/2010-06-29-434338675_x.htm)to assist referees.

Wow, I am impressed. FIFA said the opposite just yesterday. Hopefully they will come to their senses!

Japan and Paraguay on extra time now - still 0-0. It was a boring match (what I saw of it). Japan with a good chance on a free kick by Honda, but Paraguay are putting the pressure on Japan now.

Ganbare, Nippon!! :cheer:

I thought FIFA said they would not be replaying any controversial decisions on the areana screens during the match as that was an issue during the Mexica-Argentina game when the offside was clearly showed and cause issues with the Mexican bench, players and officials. Of course as that was given as a goal they had to replay it so I am unsure how that impacts what is replayed and what isn't during a game on the video screens!!

They have to reopen the debate on what to do as those were two (Englands "goal" and the offside) of the worse decisions of the torney. If they don't want to go to video replays or chip in ball then get the extra officials in the two goal areas. Regardless something needs to happen.

I heard FIFA still did not include Lempard's goal in the video highlights on their website.

I hate this - penalty shoot-offs. :( Who will be the scapegoat, and which keeper the big hero? This is nail-biting. Japan has obviously prepared for penalties - everything was decided in a minute.

I hate hate hate the penalties. It's just awful how the result of the entire match depends on the failure of one single player.

I have always hated penalties (I'm English afterall :)) but games have to be decided someway. I was surprisingly nervous for all players taking the penalties today - it's along walk to that spot!!

I got back just in time for the penalty shootoffs. How thrilling!!! I am very neutral as to who to advance and I was biting nails for both teams.

I feel bad for that Japanese player who missed. :( poor guy. Can't and don't want to imagine how he feels.

Komano is inconsolable. I feel so sorry for the player that disappoints the whole nation. This was too bad, there are so many South-American teams and no Asian left. :(

:kickass: South America with 4 of the 8 quarterfinal teams! And at least two are bona fide title contenders.

Huge congrats!

Blatter's apology (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxoEw4zDPc0).
It's about time that FIFA wakes up and joins the benefits of technology.

Congrats to Paraguay! :cheer2:

I really wish CONMEBOL had an extra qualifying spot; all our teams have done so well.

Me too. When I looked through the information about the 2010 qualifying process, I thought that they were given too few WC entries. There are so many good South American teams.
