Can anyone provide insight as to why Stephen Carriere was selected for Skate America?

Also, why wasn't Jeremy Abbott selected? All of our other reigning national champions were.

Sorry if these questions have been addressed elsewhere.

Two questions I've been wondering about, too. Especially since Carriere withdrew from Nationals.

Jeremy may have wanted other assignments?

I'm sure somewhere in this thread this has been explained, but why do some skaters get seeded and others don't?

I was startled to see Cynthia Phaneuf is seeded but Rachael Flatt isn't.

The seeds are the top six from the prior World Championships, with a few replacement rules if any of the top six retire/aren't submitted by the fed.

Pfaneuf was 5th and was seeded. Flatt was 9th and was not.

My thoughts were that they were holding SA just in case Lysacek wanted to compete at a GP this season so USFSA decided to send Abbott elsewhere but that's just me thinking out loud. I have nothing to back that up.

And they don't always sent the National Champs to Skate America. In 2009, I was hoping to see Davis/White and Abbott, the reigning champs, in Lake Placid but they assigned Lysacek and Belbin/Agosto.

I hope that Reed/Japaridze get the open SC spot. If they don't, it might mean they are dunzo. Especially considering they haven't competed at all this season yet. :/

I just watched the pairs free skate from the NHK Trophy Grand Prix. Does anyone else think the Japanese pair who won bronze were gifted by the judges because they represent the home country? The woman skater fell at least three times and other elements looked sloppy and unpolished. And Caydee Dennis and Jeremy Barrett had an almost error-free program but earned way less points. My thinking is there are politics going on here.

Takahashi/Tran's basics, choreography and interpretation are much better.

And yes, you left out the part where Denney/Barrett made errors.

And yes, there are two programs and the final result is based on both. ;) T/T tanked the FS but had a strong SP.

Laura Lepistö has withdrawn from Skate America -- her name is crossed out on the ISU chart as of today (10/26). Finnish article link: http://yle.fi/urheilu/lajit/muut/taitoluistelu/2010/10/lepiston_kauden_avaus_viivastyy_yha_2090647.html

Laura article
Google translation says that following the recovery from her hip...her achilles began to act up again.
She has her eyes set on Bern and Europeans ( no mention of Finnish Nats)

I hope she is fully recovered in time for Finnish Nationals.

Today's ISU Updates

Dance (http://isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=2196)
Updated to include Coomes/Buckland assignment to Skate America to replace Alessandrini/Vaturi.
Still no replacement for Alessandrini/Vaturi at Skate Canada.

Pairs (http://isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=2195)
Updated to show Moore-Towers/Moscovitch and Simpson/Miller's assignments to Skate Canada and Hecht/Trefil assignment to TEB.

Ladies (http://isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=2194)
Lepistö (FIN) out of Skate America.

ETA:
Oops. I forgot to add the likely replacements list for Lepistö's SA spot.

Possible replacements for Lepistö at Skate America

Cannot be an American lady, because the USA has 3 assignments to Skate America already.
Ladies already assigned to Cup of China or Russia are in gray because they compete the week before/after.

Possible replacements with 1 GP assignment already(in order of SB)
(1) Amanda Dobbs USA SB 23 - CHN
(1) Elena Glebova EST SB 36 - RUS
(1) Kristine Musademba USA 39 SB - CHN
(1) Yan Liu CHN SB 42 - CHN
(1) Joshi Helgesson SWE SB 45 - CHN
(1) Sofya Biryukova RUS SB 47 - RUS
(1) Quiying Zhu CHN SB 58 - CHN
(1) Ivana Reitmayerova SVK SB 61 - RUS
(1) Bingwa Geng CHN SB 73 - CHN

Skaters on the Alternates List (listed in order of SB rank) without a GP assignment
Cheltzie Lee AUS SB 44 (knee injury)
Oksana Gozeva RUS SB 49
Emily Hughes USA SB 50 (assume retired?)
Ellie Kawamura USA SB 55
Maria Artemieva RUS SB 56
Chae-Hwa Kim KOR SB 66
Ekaterina Kozireva RUS SB 68
Karen Zhou USA SB 74

No lady with a GP assignment already is "free."
All I can think is it may be Joshi Helgesson because her sister Viktoria is assigned to SA already and she is a one-to-one Nordic replacement. :) Or Glebova. Yan Liu may be an option because her one assignment is domestic.

Thanks! Now can you tell this to the ISU so they can update the website? :D

The pdf files are updated (finally ), see the links in my post. ;)

Only the Skate Canada entries (http://www.isuresults.com/events/fsevent00011182.htm) are not updated. :wall:

The only "real" news today is the Lepistö withdrawal.

:( Get better soon Laura! At least now it looks like Rachael is a shoo-in for the GPF, so likely at least one US lady will make the final this season.
