Deutschland uber alles! :cheer:

Our TV just had a fluff with some medicine man saying the German team asked him to bless Podolski's boots. WTF?

Go Germany! (But, yeh, I know I know, be careful what you wish for!)

• How big is winning the group? Not only does the U.S. survive to fight another day, but it gets placed into a much easier quadrant of the single-elimination tournament that now takes place. If Germany can win Group D, the U.S. would probably meet Serbia or Ghana, avoiding Germany, with the winner of the U.S.’s second-round game to face the victor of Uruguay-South Korea. Long story short: Which quadrant would you rather be in, the one with Serbia/Ghana-Uruguay-South Korea or the one with Germany-Argentina-Mexico? I think we know the answer to that one.

I woke up with about 60 minutes elapsed in the USA game. The match was much more exciting without having to watch the first 60 minutes of 0-0 tie. That was a seriously great end, though! :cheer: USA!

(And then I had to go watch cycling so that I didn't have to dwell on the fact that I enjoyed a soccer match)

Not necessarily true. The USA could play any of the four teams in Group D. It will play the second place team in Group D.

The table currently is

1. Ghana 4 pts, +1 GD
2. Germany 3 pts, +3 GD
3. Serbia 3 pts 0 GD
4. Australia 1 pt, -4 GD

Ghana plays Germany and Serbia plays Australia.

Ghana definiely advances with a win or tie. It wins the group if it wins. It wins the group if it ties and Serbia ties Australia.

Germany definitely advances with a win. It almost certainly wins the group if it wins, because Serbia would have to beat Australia by more than 4 goals to even possibly beat Germany on goal differential. Germany can advance with a tie, but only if Australia beats Serbia.

Serbia definitely advances with a win. It wins the group if it wins and Ghana and Germany tie. It also goes through on a tie if Ghana beats Germany.

Australia can only go through if Germany beats Ghana and it crushes Serbia, scoring enough goals to make up the goal differential on Ghana. Highly unlikely.

For the US to avoid playing Germany, it either has to hope that Germany beats Ghana or crashes out altogether. It really would suck to win the group and get Germany as the reward.

Couldn't Australia also advance if they beat Serbia and Ghana beats Germany? Ghana would have 7 points, Australia would have 4 points, Germany would have 3 points, and Serbia would have 3 points. Or am I missing something?

I'm currently in New York City, and the windows in my apartment are open. When the Donovan scored that goal, my neighborhood literally erupted--apartment buildings, shops and cafes with TVs, and then, once they got wind of what had happened, the people on the street. The last time something happened like this was when the Giants beat the Patriots at the Superbowl, and I don't even think that it was that loud.

So, so, so happy for the US!!!!!!!!! They need to go and get good and sloshed in South Africa tonight.

Sorry. You're absolutely right. Australia can advance under that scenario.

Kind of amused that England ended up runners up to the country that calls football 'soccer'

Perhaps, but it was the UK that coined the term "socca" or "soccer" to refer to the game.

The name derives from the term "Association Football" which was the official name of the game in the UK to distinguish it from "Rugby Football."

So it's you Brits' fault. :P

Always blame the British (or the French). ;)

Aussie's second goal was beautiful.

Serbia is bringing the best traditions of the Russian national team. When they're underdogs they play their lights out and win, when they just need to show their level and use the chances, they fail. :(

All final. Best result possible for the US. It plays Ghana, with the winner facing off against the winner of South Korea/Uruguay. Meanwhile, Germany plays England with the winner getting the winner of Mexico/Argentina.

Ghana beat the US in the last World Cup, IIRC.

I'm glad an African team made it to the knockout rounds.
